🐻 What to Do If You See a Bear (and How to Stay Safe)

Seeing a black bear in the Smoky Mountains is both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. These beautiful creatures are a big part of what makes the Smokies special—but they’re still wild animals, and safety comes first.

If you spot a bear:
1. Stay calm and don’t run. Slowly back away while keeping the bear in sight.
Don’t approach for photos. Even a seemingly calm bear can feel threatened if you get too close.
2. Make noise. Clap, yell, or bang something if the bear gets too close—most black bears will back off when startled.
3. Never feed a bear. It’s illegal in the Smokies and can lead to dangerous behavior.

Remember: A fed bear is a dead bear. When bears become used to human food, they lose their natural fear and often have to be relocated—or worse. Keep your distance and enjoy them from afar!

Last week of “I Will Always Love You” festival celebrating 40 years of Dollywood. Food and Flower festival is next. I definitely suggest tou get a food tasting pass and try all the festival food, visit the Dolly museum, see at least one show, and ride the coasters. My three favorites are Big Bear, Wild Eagle, and Lightening Rod. If you don’t want to need a chiropractor, skip the Mystery Mine coaster.
