Looking for a scenic drive with views of the Smoky Mountains? Check out the Foothills Parkway! Congress authorized the Foothills Parkway in 1944 as a scenic parkway that would provide magnificent views into Great Smoky Mountains National Park from a road corridor outside the Park. There are many scenic stops to make along the way, including Parson Bald Overlook, where visitors can see Parson Bald mountain on the right and Gregory Bald on the left. There is also Happy Valley Overlook; Look Rock, which is the tallest point on the parkway; and Great Smoky Mountains Overlook with its panoramic view of the mountains like the one seen here.

On Tuesday 5/19 Clingmans Dome Road was opened as a part of our phased reopening plan. The following roads and areas will be opened on Saturday 5/23 as we increase opportunities for day use and backcountry trails. When you're planning your trip, have several options in mind so that you can switch plans if an area is congested. Hikers and horseback riders should expect to encounter more debris and downed trees along trails. Our normal spring clearing operations to remove winter downfall by volunteers and staff have been delayed due to the park closure and local 'stay at home' orders that were in place this spring to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Enjoy your visit and stay safe!
