Name one of your favorite "hidden gems" in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Here is one that we think you would like - Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail.

The Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail is a short, paved, and mostly flat loop trail, perfect for families and those with mobility issues, located near the Sugarlands Visitor Center in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It's a great option for a quick nature walk and is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.

I suspect most of us have heard the term "dog days of summer." But do you know how the term originated or from where?

It originates from the ancient Greeks and Romans. The ancient Greeks and Romans observed that Sirius appeared to rise alongside the sun in late July, marking the beginning of the hottest period of summer. They named this period "dies caniculares," which translates to "days of the dog star". Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, is part of the constellation Canis Major (Greater Dog). The ancient Greeks named it the "dog star". They believed that the heat from Sirius, combined with the sun's heat, caused the extreme temperatures of the "dog days". The term "dog days" is now associated with the period from roughly July 3 to August 11.

If you are experiencing these "dog days" think about coming to the Smoky Mountains where temperatures are to be in the low & mid 80's in the coming week. Take time to enjoy the fresh mountain air and cool streams.
