with XNW: Alaska has been putting on a show and we have been loving getting out there to experience it with our guests! Hearing the humpbacks coordinate their bubble-net sets on the hydrophone and then listening to them breathe at the surface with motors off is truly a life altering experience.

Nerdy facts: Bubble netting is a cooperative feeding behavior in which humpbacks vocally coordinate underwater, blowing bubbles to create a net that pushes the fish to the surface of the water, allowing the whales to surface in unison to feed more effetively. The birds have also learned to benefit from this behavior and wait for the fish to be brought to the surface for an easier meal.
When these whales open their mouths to feed, their tongues invert through the floor of the mouth, into an intramuscular space called the 'cavum ventrale' that extends down to the bellybutton area, forming a large oral sac. This allows the fish/plankton/krill to flood into the oral sac with the sea water, expanding out the whales' ventral pleats. When the whales close their mouths, the ventral pleats contract and their tongues push out the sea water through their filtering baleen, keeping the fish in their mouths to consume. If you are lucky, you can watch this behavior multiple times in a row.
*Hint: if you zoom in on the whale photo, you can see the lucky fish escaping!*

We're pretty excited for July as there is a lot happening! Our own Captain Andrew is having his first art show during the First Friday (7/5/24) Art Walk in Seward Yoga at 7pm! Andrew has travelled to some of the most remote places in the world and is going to share some of his favorite memories. There will be live music by local Seward singer Selma Casagranda and we heard a rumor you might be able to get your hands on some eclairs from Le Barn Appetit Inn & Creperie! Come check out our show for a trip around the world, yoga swag, live music, great company, and some delicious treats.

Dont forget Expeditions Northwest is still running a sale though July! 15% off tours and a free photo package with promocode: SUMMER2024 at checkout!
