H Highway 1, as it is officially known, hugs California's scenic Pacific coast for 500 miles between Capistrano Beach, south of Los Angeles, and Leggett, north of San Francisco. Given the accolade of All American Road, it takes in the hectic cities of San Francisco and California as well as the magical landscape of Big Sur. You can't rush the trip – local speed limits will ensure that – but there's much to see.

I had the great pleasure to do a bicycle tour along this route, and would give it a A for scenery and wildlife. Camping one night in a eucalyptics forest, we were kept awake by the loud pig-like grunting of many male koalas who surrounded our campsite. Another rainy day, we took refuge in a winery, and spent the afternoon sampling the local wine.

Stop off to enjoy the views and splendid beaches as well as some of Australia's best rainforest scenery in the Otway Ranges. What are some memoreable animal encounters that you have had on your travels?

As an added adventure, we went on a walking safari in a private game reserve. We silently followed the guide - you know, the guy with the BIG gun, in a single file line, as we encountered many animals in a more intimate setting. Hearing a lion roar from behind a bush is quite unsettling, and sleeping in a tent is a treasured memory.

South Africa is such a wonderful beautiful country. A highlight for me was the wine country, just outside Capetown, with the beautiful vineyards, and the old Dutch Colonial style buildings - very unique and pretty. The national parks in South Africa are well organized and chock full of animals.

What is the country that you think of when you think of castles?

Ebro Route is also called Santiago de Compostela, this follows the route used by Medieval pilgrims. I was amazed when visiting Spain to find so many castles. We tend to think of France and Germany with their castles, and it's interesting to find that Spain has their share also. My favorite city in Spain was Avila, which has perhaps the best preserved medieval wall surrounding the town.

E Ebro route (Spain) Spain's ambitious long-distance footpath, the Camino Natural del Ebro or GR99, follows the course of the River Ebro for nearly 1,300km from the Cantabrian mountains to the Mediterranean. There are 42 day-stages, including rugged mountain terrain, the vineyards of La Rioja and finally the rich wildlife of the delta. Cyclists can also use the trail.

On one of my South American cruises, I cruised around Cape Horn, including stops in Ushuia Argentina, and one of my all time favorite ports - Falkland Islands, where we took a private excursion to a remote beach where thousands of penguins were nesting.
