The Town of Shenandoah Museum is excited to welcome back as a guest speaker, Robert Moore II on September 6 at 2:00 p.m. A native of Page County, Robert Moore is best known locally for his long-running Heritage & Heraldry column (1997-2010) for the Page News & Courier and published works about Page County, to include Tragedy in the Shenandoah Valley. In all, he has published a dozen books (seven being for the Virginia Regimental Histories Series), articles for a number of Civil War-focused magazines, and, for years, maintained Cenantua's Blog. He has also contributed work to a number of other publications focused on the history of the Shenandoah Valley in the Civil War.
Though testing his DNA with the National Genographic Project as early as 2006, since 2019, he has embarked on a dedicated study of ancestry as interpreted through DNA, and most especially Y DNA. His earliest efforts, in late in 2019, resulted in successfully identifying the haplotree for "Clan Muir" (Mure/Muir/Moore) of Southwest Scotland - his own Y DNA being a branch of the same.
Committing even more attention to DNA studies, in October 2022, Robert assumed the volunteer administrator role for the Moore Worldwide Y DNA Project, and by June of the next year, he began the Clan Muir Y DNA Project. He has since continued to expand his studies into Y DNA, searching for verifiable origins of other surnames in his lineage and identifying lines to the Bronze & Iron Age Pretani, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Viking Era Scandinavian, and Berber/Imazighen (North Africa) lines.
He is currently administrator and co-administrator for a dozen online Y DNA projects, overseeing nearly 7,000 kits. This has subsequently led to traveling annually to sites in Europe pursuing some of the backstories to findings in ancient DNA.
Mr. Moore’s topic on September 6 will be Origins/Ethnicity Results from DNA and the Advantages of Testing Y DNA. The Town of Shenandoah Museum is located at 507 First Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849. This is a free event.
