A boutique hotel in Dresden's old town, five hundred years old, and the one I quietly choose for the gay travelers I work with.

The Gewandhaus sits five minutes from the Frauenkirche: green velvet, marble baths, soft light, and the kind of welcome (an espresso, a note set out before you arrive) that tells you someone was expecting you. It doesn't perform. It just takes care of you.

That's what I mean by travel as you are: not the biggest hotel, the right one.

Last September, two friends from San Francisco spent eleven days moving through Greece. Ron and Sean came to me with one certainty: they wanted Greece. The islands, the light, the food, the freedom.

I built the rest — hotel by hotel, transfer by transfer, table by table. Athens. Santorini. Naxos. Mykonos.

On their last evening in Mykonos, the trip took them to Jackie O', where they met Athena Dion and Juicy Love Dion. Six months later, both Athena Dion and Juicy Love Dion would debut on RuPaul's Drag Race Season 18 — and Ron and Sean would realize, in retrospect, what they had actually witnessed that evening.

Some moments aren't on any itinerary. They tend to show up when the trip is built right.
