With a heavy and saddened heart my dad Michael Edward Hays passed away tonight.

The store will be closed on Thursday Aug 7th as I help my mother. We will be open on Friday Aug 8th as normal from 10-5pm as well as Saturday from 9-3pm. The following week open as normal but most likely closed the week after aside from that Tuesday and Wednesday and the rest of that week as we lay him to rest in the beautiful Wallow County in NE Oregon. Hour updates to come on our website when I get a chance.

I appreciate the comments and care and concern for myself and my family from previous post. He left this world with big shoes to follow and we appreciate the love shown during this time.

It will be hard moving forward but that’s what he would have wanted and that’s what we’ll do. Thank you for the great times you gave him and us at the BBQ store over the years.

Just wanted to send out a notice regarding our store hours. My father, who could usually always be found at my store the past 13 years or more is about to make his journey to heaven. After a courageous 8 month battle with cancer it appears he’s shutting down and headed to a better place very soon. I cannot guarantee we’ll be open tomorrow on Sat or even how much longer even today (Fri) but I’ll be here if I can.

I’ll update the website and possibly here as well to notify of any changes to our open hours. I apologize for any inconvenience and am sure you understand. I appreciate your concerns and his spirit and memory will live on in our hearts. He has been a big part of our store over the years and it’s tough losing a best friend and father as well. He made it to 86 last week and has had a great life.

My wife and I enjoyed a great BBQ lunch out in West Linn, Oregon off of Willamette Falls Drive at a food pod celebration known as The Garage. I’ve been privileged to eat some insanely great bbq courtesy of some great bbq Pitmasters that I call friends. The Brisket sandwich I had today among the greatest food items I’ve ever eaten…. seriously. Maria and Adam have worked as hard as any two people I know to succeed in their dream of having the best bbq they can make and the results today were outstanding.

If in the area do yourself a favor and head that direction Wednesday to Sunday and support some awesome small business owners but enjoy some world class bbq made fresh daily as well as all sides. If you have others in your family who want something other than bbq then no worries as this place has everything you could want including a full bar on sight and clean bathrooms.

Big Tasty BBQ gets a 10 out of 10 from me today and I couldn’t be any happier for these owners success as I know them well and have seen the growth and commitment to be as good as they can. Well that hard work is paying off my friends! And this review has nothing to due with my friendship with this group….. it’s earned as it’s some great bbq!

Six YS640s pellet grills headed down the road to help feed 6 different firehouses for decades of great food and smoked goodness. I can only imagine how happy those hard working firefighters are going to be once they start cooking on these grills. Yoder Smokers customers simply enjoy more time cooking time versus down time repairing their grills regularly than as most other brand owners do. You get what you pay for. Other grills may be cheaper but they are also priced accordingly as to what they are worth! Buy once and reap the rewards.

Been so busy we forgot to celebrate the end of 17 years on April 15th with the business that started out in my Barber Shop years ago. No real dream, plan or even hopeful thoughts of what it might lead to even if it did work out. 2008 was a horrible time to start a business with the recession and housing/economic shape in panic. Sometimes if ya don't listen to the naysayers and just get after it and grind, good things can happen. A strong work ethic and a little luck never hurt either and most importantly the strong and trusted relationships with top BBQ manufactures

Thanks to a loyal customer base for allowing us to stay in business and create a place where there's been a whole lot of good times and memories and more to come. It's been rewarding to have played a small part in many bbq food businesses succeeding as well as thousands and thousands of backyard family get to gathers over the years be a success with the products we offer and the advice given if asked. Those great meals and family barbecues are memories and opportunities to try to make sense of this crazy world we live in and make it more tolerable.

I've had some good buddies lend a hand more times than I can count on. This success story involves many more folks other than myself. Have enjoyed the times with my son and father here and the 3 generations spending time and working side by side. Those are memories that most folks don't get to experience and it's been something that I'll forever be grateful for. The son helps out now a days when home from college. My father Mike... or "Wally" as I've always called him... is a tough fight with Stage 4 Terminal Esophagus Cancer. If you've been to the store in the past, you've certainly met or been entertained by my old man and his story telling skills.

While his knowledge or care of Barbecue aside from eating it has always been really zero.....his people skills with customers and desire to spend "bonus time" with myself and his only grandchild kept him coming back to the store day after day for no pay when he could have been doing other things. He's still alive, just not able to be at the store anymore or at least currently. He served his country in the Army, retired from the Oregon State Police after 28 1/2 years in law enforcement as well graduated from the National FBI Academy. It's been odd not having him here daily the past 6 months. This business has provided for my family and has provided me to spend countless time with my son and father and that has been the best part of it no doubt.

I've met some really great friends along the way in this BBQ journey. My friend Myron Mixon once signed his book for me writing "BBQ makes great friends like you!" Yes indeed, you'll meet many new friends in BBQ and if you can cook good barbecue you'll meet all you want to and more!

Look forward to seeing you in the near future. Here's to year number 18 and beyond!
