Jordan has officially launched national preparations for the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, to be marked in 2030.

On Monday, August 10, 2026, Prime Minister Jafar Hassan chaired the first meeting of the National Committee for the Preparation of the Celebration of the Second Millennium of the Baptism of Jesus Christ. The committee includes government ministers, Church leaders, and representatives of key institutions.

The traditional site of the baptism is Al-Maghtas on the Jordan River. Plans under review include an integrated village for Christian pilgrims, a museum dedicated to the Baptism of Jesus, a green corridor, and infrastructure upgrades at the site.

Hassan stressed the need to begin preparations immediately, in line with directives from King Abdullah II and the initiative of the Council of Church Leaders in Jordan. He noted that the anniversary highlights Jordan’s historical and religious standing as a global destination for Christian pilgrimage and its message of coexistence, peace, love, and human fraternity.

Religious leaders on the committee include Greek Orthodox Archbishop Christophoros Atallah, Latin Patriarchal Vicar Archbishop Iyad Twal, Anglican Archbishop Hossam Naoum, and former Lutheran Bishop Munib Younan.

The government said it is mobilizing resources to reinforce Jordan’s position as a land of religious heritage.

Jordan has begun preparations for a historic celebration in 2030, marking 2,000 years since the traditional date of the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist at Al-Maghtas, on the eastern bank of the Jordan River.

Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan chaired the first meeting of the National Committee for the Preparation of the Second Millennium of the Baptism of Jesus Christ on August 10, bringing together government officials, Christian leaders and representatives of religious and community institutions.

Hassan said preparations must begin immediately, following the directives of King Abdullah II and an initiative from Jordan’s Council of Church Leaders.

He described the anniversary as an opportunity to highlight Jordan’s deep Christian heritage and its role as a major destination for pilgrims from around the world. He also said the celebration could showcase Jordan’s message of coexistence, peace, respect, love and human fraternity.

Plans already under consideration include an integrated village for Christian pilgrims, a museum dedicated to the Baptism of Jesus, a green corridor and improvements to infrastructure around the sacred site.

The committee will also establish specialized teams, supported by experts, to oversee preparations for the landmark anniversary.

For Christians, Al-Maghtas is more than an archaeological or tourist destination. It is a place where the Gospel recalls the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, when John baptized Him in the Jordan.

As Jordan prepares to welcome pilgrims from across the world in 2030, the anniversary is expected to become both a celebration of Christian heritage and an invitation to rediscover the message of faith, peace and unity associated with the sacred waters of Jordan.
