Fort Sidney’s Summer Grounds….known as Camp Conrad. Located to the immediate east of the fort. Each tent slept 13 men in pie formation with a stove in the center. The sides of the tents rolled up. The firing range and cannons were also located in this area, along with the vegetable gardens. The soldiers practiced their skills with rifles, guns and the canons here. The Lodgepole creek was split west of town and a channel flowed to the fort about where Jackson Street is now. It ran in front of the building that is now the museum and split again at the current corner of Jackson and 6th street. This channel ran in front of officers row. All the buildings had a foot bridge over the water. It ran the length of 6th street and rejoined Lodgepole creek. As the water continued down in front of location that is now the museum, it also passed in front of of the canteen which was directly to the east of the current museum. The channel again split to run in front of the of the fort buildings that were located on what is now 5th street. It also ran to the east of 5th street to water the gardens….then these channels headed to the south to again join into Lodgepole Creek. All the buildings on the Fort grounds had fresh running water out of the creek, for the soldiers. Pretty amazing for the 1870s.
