A bison carcass in Yellowstone can be difficult to look at. Our instinct is often to see only loss, but in nature, death is not an end—it is a beginning.

Wolves are often one of the first species to feed, yet they leave behind enough to sustain bears, coyotes, foxes, ravens, eagles, magpies, insects, and countless microscopic organisms.

What may appear to us as tragedy becomes a gift that ripples through the ecosystem.

In Yellowstone, nothing is wasted. Each fallen bison returns its energy to the land, nourishing life in ways both seen and unseen.

It is a quiet reminder that even in death, every living creature has a purpose, and that nature’s cycles are built not only on life, but also on the generosity of what comes after.
