I am so proud to be a part of the DC Rotary Club.

I am approaching 11 years as an active member of Rotary, having served as Sergeant-at-Arms, Chair of several committees, member of many more committees, member of the Board of Directors and now a Foundation Board Member. I am a Polio Plus Fellow, a Paul Harris + 8 Fellow and a yearly member of the Presidents Club - significant donations supporting the DC Rotary Club and the Rotary International Foundation every year. I was also selected as Rotarian of the Year for my Club in 2022-23.

This will be a year of giving back and we’ve already started!

Last week I began an initiative of collecting new or gently-used luggage for foster children in our area. Foster kids, sadly, get moved around a lot and often without luggage - their belongings get toted about in plastic garbage bags. No bueno and dehumanizing.

Fellow Rotarian Lisa Cohen of the Rotary Club of DC, initiated an effort in DC a couple years ago to mitigate this problem and has been decreed by the Mayor as “Lisa’s Law”.

I was able to follow in her groundbreaking footsteps by reaching out to my Next Door community to do a drive for luggage. Within a week, I collected 75 pieces of luggage, duffels, backpacks and tote bags. They will be delivered tomorrow to a family services agency that will distribute them to foster children.

It takes a village.

At today’s Rotary meeting, I did the unveiling of our Club’s President (Donnie Shaw) Official Portrait. This was in front of a room full of members, members present remotely on Zoom and our speaker, the Ambassador to the US from Lichtenstein!

This weekend is the District Conference for Rotary Clubs 7610 and 7620. Our booth will have a display of recognizable Rotarians including Donnie’s portrait and our District’s Governor, Mandy Granger, as 30” framed canvases.
