What a great couple of days on the Islands in the Med, first was Menorca where we went kayaking, Bruce is always such a good sport. Today is Alghero, Sardinia, Italy where we were able to learn how to make pasta, it was a great time and we were able to eat some fresh, pasta! Both locations were wonderful and worth visiting again.

We finally made it to our ship yesterday and what a beauty she is! I can see why people have become loyal Explora cruisers. Comments about the ship are with each picture, we are so happy to be on the water again.

Barcelona has been good to us! We love visiting the Holy Sites but then we love doing food and wine events too, this trip has given us all of it. We weren’t able to see the Black Madonna the last time we were here so we went to Montserrat and paired the trip with a visit to a local winery. Next we took a Paella Cooking Class, such fun for a lunch activity! Mass on Sunday, no problem, head to the Cathedral and experience a Mass in Catalan, we are very blessed.

What a great time in Madrid, not only did we get to see the Pope but we did a bit of wandering, touring, and Tapas Tasting with a tour. Since we walked the El Camino a few years ago we always keep our eyes out for signs of being on the trail. While there’s no popular trail from Madrid to Santiago De Compostela Madrid likes getting in on the action especially since many pilgrims will fly into the city. Bruce managed to collect a couple of stamps at some churches and we walked over 6 miles just to earn the stamps. We went through a great food market, it provided a whole new meaning for the snack, pigs in a blanket. In the center of Madrid there’s a spot that claims to be equidistance to all the borders of Spain. It’s in the Plaza del Sol, a must do while in town. We also visit the primary Cathedral in Madrid, it has a very colorful altar and beautiful organ to the rear of the church.

What a day to be in Madrid! We wandered out of our VRBO and walked a few blocks to where the Pope was scheduled to drive by, such an incredible experience to see him if even for just a few seconds.

Yesterday was our final tour in Vietnam, we went to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). It is a huge city with 10 million people living there, there are 7 million scooters and 2.5 million cars, quite the driving experience.

It’s definitely a thriving metropolis and worth visiting but the War Remnants Museum was a reminder of how the winner gets to write history and frame the story. It’s also a reminder there are really no winners in war.

We visited a crazy shopping mall, deals to be had at every turn, I can think of so many who would have benefited by shopping there, it was sadly lost on me.

I’m very glad we went there, I’d be fine going back and spending more time but for now I’m glad to have a day at sea before we arrive in Bangkok.

We landed at Da Nang to catch a bus up to Hue and then on to Our Lady of La Vang, a Marian apparition site. About 7% of the population is Catholic and our tour guide was a 7th generation Catholic, he’s very devout and a great guide who gave us loads of good information.

He also told of an encounter where he helped an old Marine reconnect with a then young boy the Marine had met while serving in Vietnam. With no more than a picture and a location our guide was able to find a relative who recognized the boy as her father. The two were reconnected and stories told.

We also visited the home of Cardinal Nguyen Van Thuan who was imprisoned by the Communist for 13 years and endured solitary confinement for 9 of those years. Our priest, Fr Kaim, met the Cardinal at the Vatican so we felt like we had a connection. The Cardinal has been recommended for Sainthood.

To top off the day we had an amazing lunch within the Citadel area of Hue. Today we’re at sea but tomorrow we’ll tour Ho Chi Minh City, more to follow.

We made it to Vietnam and we spent 2 days getting to tour around the North from Ha Long Bay. The first day we took a bus tour and were able to get around to many great sites but the second day Bruce and I went on our own excursion with the cruise ship on a boat tour of Ha Long Bay. Both days were great and allowed us to see so much of how Vietnam is recovering. Our tour guide on the first day praised Bill Clinton since he was the one to allow trade again between the US and Vietnam, lots of growth since then.
