Cooking bread in geothermal areas in Iceland has been done since the time of the Vikings. A hole is dug in the sand until boiling water is reached and a pot with dough in it is placed in the ground and sand is shoveled over it. It is left to cook for 24 hours! At the hot springs in Laugarvatn our group watched the ancient process of bread baking and had a tasting of sweet delicious brown bread fresh from the hot springs smothered in butter and freshly smoked trout by a beautiful Icelandic lake.
