One of my favorite Europe trip ideas for first-time visitors? Northern Italy + Switzerland. ⛰️
It’s the kind of trip that feels like three vacations rolled into one.
Picture this: starting your morning with an espresso near Lake Como… wandering the canals of Venice a few days later… then riding scenic trains through the Swiss Alps past waterfalls, glaciers, lakes, and those little storybook villages that don’t feel real until you’re standing there.
And the best part? This route works so well by train. No rental car stress, no guessing your way through mountain roads, and no losing half your trip to complicated transfers.
Here’s what a 9-night / 10-day version could look like:
📍 Milan — 2 Nights
Explore Italy’s fashion capital, visit the Duomo, stroll through Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, and take an optional day trip to Lake Como.
🚆 High-speed rail to Venice
📍 Venice — 2 Nights
Ride through the canals by gondola, explore St. Mark’s Square and Doge’s Palace, and add a Murano & Burano lagoon excursion.
🚆 Rail from Venice to Lucerne, Switzerland
📍 Lucerne — 3 Nights
Take a Lake Lucerne cruise, head up Mt. Pilatus or Mt. Rigi, and enjoy those classic Swiss alpine views everywhere you look.
🚆 Panoramic rail journey on the GoldenPass Line
📍 Interlaken / Jungfrau Region — 2 Nights
Visit Jungfraujoch “Top of Europe,” see the waterfalls of Lauterbrunnen Valley, or add something adventurous like paragliding or alpine hiking.
🚆 Rail to Zurich for your flight home
Why travelers love this route:
