This Memorial Day, I’m reflecting on the incredible sacrifices made by the men and women who served our country. For me, it’s especially personal. Pictured here is my grandfather, Elmer Schmidt, whose bravery and service during World War II inspire me deeply.
Elmer was part of the 8th Air Force, connected with the 303rd Group, famously known as “The Hell’s Angels.” As the radioman, he sat behind the pilot’s compartment near the bomb bay doors, completing an astounding 30 missions. After leaving the Molesworth Air Force base in England in 1945, Elmer returned home as a Tech Sergeant, traveling on a hospital ship assisting the wounded. Back in Colton, WA, he married my grandmother, Eileen, and together they built a family of seven children.
The sacrifices Elmer and so many others made are ones I will never fully understand, but they will always have my deepest respect and appreciation.
Today, let’s honor and remember those who put everything on the line for our freedom. Take a moment to think of their sacrifices, their courage, and their contributions.
