You should never pick a Trillium!
Here's why...
1. They're protected by law.
2. It takes 9 years after germination for a trillium to flower.
3. Each flower yields only ONE seed pod each year.
4. Each plant can live up to 25 years, and gains all of its nourishment for the remainder of the year during the spring when its leaves are present.
5. Trillium are propagated by ANTS. Not bees, the wind or birds. The seeds are covered by a sweet coating, which entices the ants to carry seeds underground into their colonies. After eating the coating, the seed germinates in the perfect subterranean environment.
Every trillium in the forest is essentially a little miracle...

Night hikes are the best when you bring a UV light. Tonight did not disappoint. The trail was littered with these guys! We saw at least 30! Apheloria virginiensis, scrolling down to read more about them!

Apheloria virginiensis, the Kentucky flat millipede, is a large North American millipede. It gets its name from the yellow and orange markings on its back that give it a flattened appearance. It is reported to secrete cyanide compounds as a defense mechanism. This mechanism also makes it an object of fascination to many amateur entomologists, as the cyanide compounds reportedly give off a scent similar to cherries. It is recommended that one wash their hands after handling this organism as the compounds it secretes are poisonous and can cause extreme irritation if rubbed in the eyes.

All Red River Gorge roads closed for the winter season will reopen to motorized use tomorrow (3/8). Closing these roads in winter protects them from taking extra damage from freezing and thawing, but, now that the Forest is warming up, Indian Creek 9B, Chimney Top, Rock Bridge & Tunnel Ridge roads will be fully reopened!
