Happy World Oceans Day! 🌊

At Epic Polar, today is extra special and we want to shine a light on one of our most beloved Arctic icons: the polar bear 🐻‍❄️

What many people don’t know is that polar bears are actually marine mammals. Classified as Ursus maritimus, meaning “sea bear,” they depend entirely on the Arctic Ocean to survive, hunting from sea ice, swimming between ice floes, and spending most of their lives in an intimate relationship with the sea.

When the ocean suffers, polar bears suffer. Melting sea ice doesn’t just change a landscape. It destroys a hunting ground, a home, a lifeline.

This year’s World Oceans Day theme is REIMAGINE, a reminder that the ocean is the life source sustaining every organism on Earth. For Epic Polar, reimagining means a future where the Arctic Ocean is protected, the ice holds, and the sea bear still rules the frozen north.

In summer, the islands reveals its volcanic black sand beaches, towering rust-brown mountains teeming with wildlife, and vast open spaces just waiting to be explored.

And that’s just one of the reasons we’re so captivated by this extraordinary continent and why we’ve made it our speciality: to bring you here.

Our team is passionate about Antarctica and can’t wait to hear from you.

Did you know?
Antarctica isn’t owned by anyone, it belongs to science, to wildlife, and to the future!

The Antarctic Treaty froze all territorial claims and dedicated the entire continent to peace and science. That means no military activity, mining, or nuclear testing. Just research, cooperation, and protection.

And it's possible to visit. The best part? We can take you there.

We are proud to say that we work with operators that are member of IAATO (The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators), the gold standard for responsible polar travel. Founded in 1991, IAATO ensures that every visit to the White Continent is:

✅ Safe
✅ Environmentally responsible
✅ Limited in size (max 100 guests ashore at once)
✅ Guided by trained expedition staff
✅ Wildlife-respectful (5m from penguins, 25m from seals)

Every IAATO operator follows strict biosecurity, waste, and landing protocols so the Antarctica we love today is the same one our grandchildren get to see.

Traveling with an IAATO member isn’t a bonus, it’s a promise from us to you.

Meet the deepest diver on the beach! 🦭

You’d never guess it from the snoring, blubbery pile basking on the shore, but the southern elephant seal is one of the most extreme athletes on the planet.

Epic Polar’s biologist breaks it down: these “torpedo-shaped” giants have been recorded diving up to 2 kilometers deep and holding their breath for nearly two hours, longer than any other seal on Earth.

Fun fact: that’s deeper than most submarines operate

Greenland: the wildest island on Earth!

Did you know?

1️⃣ It’s the world’s largest island, but not a continent. At 2.16 million km², Greenland is roughly 3x the size of Texas.

2️⃣ ~80% of it is buried under ice up to 3 km thick. If it all melted, global sea levels would rise about 7 metres.

3️⃣ Only ~56,000 people live here, making it the least densely populated country on Earth. ~89% are Inuit.

4️⃣ There are zero roads connecting towns. Travel between settlements happens by boat, plane, snowmobile, or dog sled. 🛶🐕

5️⃣ The capital, Nuuk, is home to nearly a third of the entire population (~19,000 people).

6️⃣ The words kayak, igloo, and anorak all come from Greenlandic/Inuit languages.

7️⃣ Jakobshavn Glacier (Sermeq Kujalleq) is one of the fastest-moving glaciers on Earth and feeds the icebergs of Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (cover photo of our carousel)

Three seasons in Antarctica and our photographer still gets amazed every time the ship crosses the Drake 🌊

In her latest piece on the Epic Polar blog (inside the Experiences menu), she shares a few things she wants every first-timer to know before booking:

→ It’s not just a trip. It’s an expedition.

→ Wildlife encounters are unmatched, as Antarctic animals have no fear response to humans.

→ Biosecurity matters. Every piece of gear is vacuumed and disinfected before landing, protecting one of the last places on Earth with almost no invasive species.

→ No country owns it. No one lives there permanently. It’s governed by treaty as a zone of peace and science.

→ You come back different. Maya has watched it happen to hundreds of passengers.
