Hi friends - this is the Snohomish Historical Society's first public fundraising appeal in many years. For over a decade, basic maintenance, operations, and fundraising at Snohomish's only museum were left undone, and now we are hard at work trying to reopen and reshare the irreplaceable history that the Society stewards. This year will bring many major projects for the Society, but our first priority is keeping the 1878 museum secure and safe from disaster. Without its history, there is no Snohomish. Thank you for helping us protect it.

Everyone's favorite parade day in Snohomish! ❤️🚸

In January 1953, the first homecoming celebration was held during half-time of a basketball game. 🏀

It was a modest ceremony that was switched to football season the next year, and in 1959, the pep rally became a parade marched through the streets of town. 🏈

This is the beginning of the annual Serpentine tradition, which continues today, and is one of only a few occasions in the state where students leave class to celebrate school spirit with their community. I think that is darned special. 🤩🙏✨

Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pilchuck River, a sacred burial ground holds a forgotten past.

To Coast Salish families, and later American settlers, it was a place of reverence and rest. In 1876, it became Snohomish County’s first cemetery.

Within a few generations, the cemetery was abandoned, its records lost and graves forgotten. Soon, the burial ground had been bulldozed and built over. Local memory held faint traces of what had been. More than a century later, a descendant came looking for ancestors—and found instead a parking lot. Buried beneath was evidence of a past long denied.

This is a story of what the city forgot. 🪦

Announcing a must-have addition to the local bookshelf—
First Street Stories, a memoir by the one-and-only Mac Bates!

Mac is one of our town’s great storytellers. He captures Snohomish of the 1950s and ’60s as he remembers it: parades, storefronts and shopkeeps, a few disasters, and youthful misadventure. I’ve had the pleasure of developing this book with him, and it’s been a real treat to read. Growing up with the editor of the Snohomish Tribune (his father), Mac inherited a keen eye for character and story, and brings life to the everyday moments of First Street history.

For anyone who has wandered through Snohomish's downtown, this book is a tribute to its enduring small-town spirit.
