We’ve just spent a week at Bitterroot Ranch in Wyoming and, let’s just say – we really didn’t want to come home! 🐎🤎

There’s something wonderfully restorative about spending a week in a place where the days revolve around horses, big skies, good food and the landscape around you.

Bitterroot is a particularly special place to ride. Over the course of the week we rode several different horses, each with their own personality, and explored a remarkable variety of jaw-droppingly vast Wyoming scenery.

Think loping through wide-open sagebrush country, exploring rocky gorges, riding through pine and aspen forests, crossing almost lunar-looking landscapes and winding through beautiful mountain meadows. The Wind River and Absaroka ranges seem to follow you wherever you go!

And it’s not all trail riding. During our stay we also had the chance to help round up the ranch cattle and try our hand at cowboy games such as team penning. (It’s harder than it looks! 🤠)

Then there are the quiet, restful moments between rides.

Pre-dinner drinks, wonderfully generous buffet-style breakfasts, lunches and dinners shared with owners Mel, Richard and Hadley and fellow guests, time to sit beside the river or catch up on stories from the trail – and Hadley’s restorative yoga sessions twice a week.

They’re the sorts of simple pleasures that make you realise you’ve properly switched off.

We also love Bitterroot’s old-fashioned cowboy charm. It’s a wonderfully peaceful place that feels blissfully removed from our fast-paced, ever-changing world.

The historic buildings, log cabins and relaxed atmosphere have an authenticity that’s increasingly hard to find, while nearby Dubois is a delightful little Western town that’s well worth exploring.

But for us, it’s the combination of serious riding, beautifully produced horses, extraordinary scenery and genuine peace and quiet that makes Bitterroot so memorable.
