Spanish Florida invited escaped British and American slaves to freedom in Florida, requiring Africans to convert to Catholicism and defend against British and American invasions. Florida's first years were dominated by the Seminole Wars, really the Black Seminoles, whereby Africans and Native Americans joined forces to combat being sent to Oklahoma or back to the plantation for Africans. ack Seminoles make up a large part of this page. Lastly is Miami's little known contribution to civil rights in the 1950s and 60s. Miami's foreign born black population is larger than the American born black population, adding to its unique flavor.

Thelma Gibson was a pioneer in the Miami civil rights movement, the first nurse to cross Jackson Hospital's color line. She stands alone as an icon, but when coupled with her husband Theodore, they were THE civil rights power couple back in the day.

Thelma Vernell Anderson Gibson, a pioneering nurse, civil rights advocate and longtime Coconut Grove community leader, has died at 99.
