And land on it too. 😏

Meet the Tahoe Flyer: a 21-ton, 120-foot-long catamaran-style vessel built specifically to launch and recover hot air balloons on Lake Tahoe.

Think of it as part boat, part chase vehicle and part aircraft carrier.

While the balloon drifts wherever the morning winds decide to take it, the Tahoe Flyer follows along below. Then pilot, captain and crew work together to reunite balloon and boat for one of the most unusual landings you’ll ever witness.

There are hot air balloons all over the world.

Some experiences are even better when you get to share them. Sometimes with people you know. Other times it’s a whole group of new faces and friends. 🎈🚤

There’s something really fun about watching a group see the balloon come to life together — the pointing, the smiling, the “wait, this is actually happening” energy.

Then everyone lifts off above Lake Tahoe and suddenly it becomes one of those stories you’ll all tell differently, but remember together.

Labor Day has a funny way of convincing everyone that summer adventures are over.

Lake Tahoe would like a word. 😉

September still has plenty of mornings left for getting outside, chasing something memorable and doing that thing you've spent all summer saying:

“We should totally do that sometime!”

And if flying above Lake Tahoe has been sitting on your list, remember that our balloon season doesn't last all year.

Our 2026 flights run only through October 18. Eventually “sometime” runs into “next year.”

The balloon flight is incredible, but the whole morning is what makes the experience feel so unforgettable. 🎈

You start on the Tahoe Flyer. You watch the balloon inflate on the lake. You feel the excitement build before lift-off. Then suddenly you’re floating above it all, taking in views you can’t get any other way.

📣 Fun fact! Despite the name, a hot air balloon starts out pretty cold. 🎈😉

Before those burners ever fire up, powerful fans fill the balloon with regular, unheated air. As the envelope grows (and grows… and GROWS), it begins to take shape while still lying on its side.

Once it’s nearly full, that’s when things heat up. 🔥 The burners come to life, warm the air inside and slowly lift the balloon upright.

Cold air first. Hot air second. Then… up, up and away.

Here’s something people don’t always understand about hot air ballooning until they experience it:

It doesn’t really feel like you’re moving.

There’s no engine carrying you forward. No sensation of racing through the sky. You’re drifting with the wind, which can make it feel as though you’re perfectly still while Lake Tahoe slowly moves beneath you.

One minute the treetops 🌲 feel close enough to touch. Later, the entire Tahoe Basin seems to open beneath you. And somewhere in between, you understand why people become completely obsessed with ballooning. 🎈
