In April 2016, East Bay musician Sam Rudin opened The Back Room, a small, intimate club in Berkeley that offers, according to Rudin, “a living room intimacy that allowed lesser-known musicians to make their mark, and better known players to get up close and personal with their fans.”
A rousing success since its inception, The Back Room seats no more than 100 people, yet the venue is loaded with atmosphere. It features brick walls, vaulted wood ceilings and thrift store couches, and is located right by Berkeley’s Arts District.
Among the bands that will be performing for the tenth anniversary is Bululú, an eight-piece Latin band which features several LGBT members, and will perform on April 17 at 8pm.
“Bululú is a Venezuelan word used to describe a lively commotion,” Lali Mejia, a gay woman who’s the band leader, told writer David-Elijah Nahmod. “A crowd, a buzz, or that electric feeling when people come together and something exciting is happening. It’s the kind of word you’d use after a great night out. ‘That party was a full-on bululú.’”
