Captain Betsy Boating Tours

Captain Betsy Boating Tours Business now closed My dear passegner guests, I am closing down the Captain Betsy Boating tours and moving back to the west in February 2017.

It has been such a wonderful time with each and every one of you who have come aboard ENCORE before and I cherish the memories, as well as all the photos! Thank you all, Captain Betsy

Let me apologize for being such a hack at the video, which we were all told was OK for everyone in the audience to take photos and video as the choir said a tearful good bye to Lea Salonga and Sir David Suchet. Their featured singing and narration with the choir during Music and the Spoken Word today was truly beautiful, meaningful and memorable. What a treat for the three of us to be there today.

Captain Mary Beth Ray drops everything and shows up when the call comes! Skills for all vessels of any size and shape; has not been aboard many boats she does not like!

A mother Osprey feeding her young chick, on the ICW just off Southport Marina. A snowy white egret preening in the Bald Head Island entrance. And an American White Ibis in flight from Battery Island headed to Southport, NC. All captured by a passenger aboard ENCORE with a professional camera and the skills to match. Amazing!

Well, it started off as the usual delightful group aboard for a late afternoon cruise of the Cape Fear River. They were enjoying the weather, each other, a little history, a few drinks and appetizers. Then we saw the two young men on a small craft just north of buoy 19 signaling/waving at us. We pull close and learn they had no battery and were dead in the water. So what next? Tie a few bowlines, put the lines together, heave them one to drop on the cleat and off we went to the Southport Marina. No space along the fuel dock, so we did a neat little slow slingshot on to a space on the end of A dock in front of a yacht. Yikes! No harm, no damage; all worked out and their wives were on their way from Wilmington last time we checked!

Captain John explaining a few things about the Cape Fear River - What is a range light? What it that little brick structure on the land by the ADM pier? How did they determine how deep the water was back before depth sounding? What is a fathom? Great to have him aboard as the Captain while I served as crew.

Yes, all birders....the American Ibis are here on Battery Island just off Southport in HUGE numbers! They fly back and forth to the mainland to feed and bring additional construction materials for their nest building. It is a thrill to see them on the island and in the air. And now we await the sightings of little ones.
