The Spartanburg Academic Movement’s ‘Big MO’ effort is working to make sure high school seniors from across the county have the support, guidance, and resources needed to take their next step after graduation. Funded by Movement 2030, Big MO’s name reflects the program’s purpose: “momentum matters.”

With the new school year firmly underway, we want to recognize the work being done by our talent team, particularly when it comes to EDGE, our work-based learning initiative. This summer, we worked with more than 100 employers to create 651 internships for high-schoolers, and the results have been very impressive.

Ed's All Purpose Seasoning and Rub LLC was started in Chesnee in 2015 as Ed and Ysante McDowell were cooking in their home kitchen. Ed put together a blend of seasonings that impressed Ysante, the couple was off on their small business success story. Now, 11 years later, the pair are actively involved with Power Up Spartanburg, aiming to help other entrepreneurs take the next step. Congrats to Ed and Ysante for being named our August Small Business Success Award winners, presented by TD Bank.

Re: Degree Spartanburg recently celebrated an incredible milestone: 100 individuals earning a degree or high-value certification since the program’s launch in 2024. Initial projections showed Re:Degree wouldn’t have any graduates until this year, so to be so far ahead of initial expectations is a sign that our work to connect with the thousands across Spartanburg County with some college experience but no degree is working. Thanks to our collegiate-level partners and to the Spartanburg Academic Movement's Movement 2030 for the foundational support. Here's to the next 100 graduates!

Spartanburg County’s path to hosting NCAA Championships was the result of intentional planning and consistent collaboration.
