Rome amazed me. Venice felt magical. But Florence completely stole my heart.

There was something about Florence that felt slower, softer, and incredibly romantic. The streets felt walkable and welcoming, the architecture was breathtaking around every corner, and somehow the entire city felt like living inside a painting. The Duomo especially left me speechless with its beautiful marble exterior in shades of white, green, and pink glowing in the sunlight.

Maybe it was the sunsets over the Arno River. Maybe it was the fresh pasta and wine. Maybe it was wandering through little side streets discovering hidden cafés and leather shops. Or maybe it was simply the feeling Florence gave me — peaceful, beautiful, and timeless.

Out of all three cities, Florence was the one I could most easily imagine returning to for a longer stay someday.

I already miss it.

Before we went to Rome, everyone kept giving us food advice. One thing I heard over and over was: “Don’t eat at restaurants with photo menus displayed outside.”

Then a friend who had just visited Rome sent me a restaurant recommendation directly across from the Colosseum. We walked up to it and immediately started laughing… because right outside the restaurant were giant photos of all the menu items.

At that point, we decided to ignore the “rules” and eat there anyway.

And honestly? I’m so glad we did.

I ordered a pasta with truffle sauce, and from the very first bite, I was completely blown away. It was hands down some of the best pasta I have ever eaten in my life. We paired it with Hugo spritzes, sat there looking at the Colosseum, and had one of those travel moments you never forget.

It was also in Rome that my husband discovered pizzas in Italy are often served as a full unsliced pie. No pre-cut slices. Just authentic, delicious pizza exactly as it should be.

Everyone tells you the food in Italy is incredible, but somehow it still exceeded every expectation I had.

Take me back to Rome. I’m already craving another plate of pasta.

5 things that genuinely surprised me about Rome:

1. It felt far less commercialized than I expected. For some reason, I imagined Rome would feel like a giant busy modern city similar to New York. Instead, there were cobblestone streets, historic buildings, charming cafés, and almost no towering skyscrapers. It felt timeless rather than commercial.
2. Everything really is ancient. Of course, I knew Rome was old, but standing there in person made it hit differently. You casually walk past structures that are nearly 2,000 years old. As Americans, our history feels very young in comparison.
3. English was spoken almost everywhere. Not everyone spoke English, of course, but nearly everyone working in tourism, hotels, restaurants, and transportation did. It made navigating the city much easier than I anticipated.
4. The food exceeded every expectation. Not only was every meal delicious, but it also wasn’t nearly as expensive as I thought it would be. We truly did not have a single bad meal in Rome.
5. Rome felt incredibly walkable and surprisingly clean. We walked everywhere. The streets were full of people, the city felt alive at all hours, and we never felt unsafe exploring.

Rome completely exceeded my expectations, and honestly, I already miss it.

For the next few weeks, I’m taking you along on one of the most meaningful trips we’ve ever taken…Italy.
From the ancient streets of Rome to the beauty of Florence and the dreamy canals of Venice, this journey reminded me why travel stays with us long after we return home.
What made this trip even more special is that it almost didn’t happen. After years of delays and cancellations, finally stepping onto those cobblestone streets felt emotional in the very best way.
We traveled through Italy with Railbookers, and I’ll be sharing everything over the next several weeks:
• what surprised us
• our favorite hotels and meals
• train travel tips
• must-see experiences
• and why Italy may be more doable than you think
If Italy has been on your bucket list, follow along. I cannot wait to share this incredible journey with you.
