In 2018, the Sagrada Family of Trustees paid $36 Million for a building permit that was 136 years past due. Construction for the Sagrada Familia broke ground in Barcelona, Spain in 1882, and up until 2018, no official permit was ever applied for. Antonio Guadi is the architect attributed to the Sagrada Famila and he devoted most of his career to this one project knowing he would never see its completion. When he died in in 1926, the building was only 25% complete. He was laid to rest in the crypt of the church. Three years from now, in 2026, the Sagrada Familia is scheduled to be complete after 144 years of construction.

If you are traveling from Venice to Florence and have a day to spare, get off the train in Bologna and and transfer to a train departing for Ravenna. In Ravenna, you will find the basilica of San Vitale. Built in 525 AD, less than 500 years after the death of Christ, it is one of the earliest examples in the world of cathedral architecture that incorporates the flying buttress, an exterior structural element that looks like a half-arch. The buttress allows for buildings to be very tall but with much thinner walls. The thin walls allowed for larger windows and very high ceilings, hallmarks of early cathedral architecture.

If you go to Milan and hope to see the fresco, The Last Supper, by Leonardo da Vinci, you will be disappointed when you walk up to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie to purchase tickets and they tell you that advanced reservations are required. In fact you may need to book a reservation to see the artwork as soon as you decide Milan will be on your Italian itinerary. They sell out months in advance. One can’t help but be excited while leaving Florence when Rome is your destination.
