This very dramatic post popped up a few times on my feed and I feel like it needs to be addressed. When I clicked on the comments, there is a link to a CNN news story that has the same headline. It's a real life Sunshine 2 Snowflakes story (see what I did there? Haha)
Yes, the Oasis if the Seas had to change their itinerary to travel to Canada instead of the Bahamas. Yes, this is a huge change. Yes, this is frustrating. Yes, this even caused issues for families traveling with children under 1 and people with criminal backgrounds because Canada's rules are different than the Caribbean. Most importantly - yes it was VERY short notice.
However, this post makes it sound like people got on the ship and then woke up in Canada with zero warning. I have touched on this before and how important it is to know that itinerary changes are always a possibility when cruising and the cruise line is not obligated to provide you with any compensation. These changes can occur because of weather, issues in a country original scheduled to visit, damage to piers, ship issues, etc. Most of the time, you cannot cancel without penalty just because of an itinerary change.
While this particular headline is extremely dramatic, it is important to know this is a possibility and one you have very limited control over or recourse for. Make sure to always pack a sweatshirt just in case your warm weather cruise ends up in Canada!
