We rounded a corner and suddenly, there he was. A massive bull elephant in musth. You can tell by the secretions running down the side of his face and the urine dribbling near his hind legs. But even without those signs, his body language said everything. Head high. Thrashing the bushes. Making it very clear this was his road. Our guide didn’t hesitate. We pulled over immediately and gave him all the space he wanted.

Remote bush airstrips are often wide-open clearings where wildlife can keep an eye out for predators. Before every landing, bush pilots scan the runway for animals and other hazards. Ours spotted impala just before touchdown, so we climbed back into the sky and tried again.
