Happy Anniversary! 🎉

Today is the 181st anniversary of the official opening of the Old Courthouse Rotunda on February 22, 1845. The Rotunda was opened with a birthday ball in honor of George Washington’s birthday. Washington’s portrait is featured in the highly decorated interior of the Rotunda.

Grand Station🚊

The futuristic glass and steel pavilion looks sharp under those lights, and the bright “GRAND” sign almost feels like a throwback neon crown. But it’s not polished and perfect; you’ve got the dark sky, empty stretches of pavement, the hum of traffic, headlights ripping past, and that St. Louis night that feels a little gritty and real.

It’s quiet, but not quiet. You can almost hear the trains coming, cars flying down the road, and the city still awake.

Not glamorous. Just honest.
That’s STL at night. 🌃

Happy Birthday! 🎂

Happy Birthday! 🎂

St. Louis turns 262 years old this weekend. Depending on the source, the date on which Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau landed on the site to found the city of St. Louis was either February 14th or 15th, 1764. The Old Cathedral sits on the only piece of land never to have transferred ownership in that time. While the Cathedral itself is from 1831-1834, the site was home to two other churches, one log, and one brick, before that.

🎉 Happy Birthday, St. Louis! — Founded February 14, 1764 🎉

On February 14, 1764, the city of St. Louis was officially founded — making Valentine’s Day the birthday of our hometown! ❤️🏙️

Founded as a French fur trading post along the Mississippi River, St. Louis was named in honor of King Louis IX of France. What began as a small riverside settlement has grown into the vibrant city we love today.

We owe the city’s founding to:

🏛️ Pierre Laclède

A French merchant who selected the site that would become St. Louis for its prime location along the Mississippi River.

🏛️ Auguste Chouteau

Just 14 years old at the time, he helped establish the settlement and later became one of the most influential early citizens of St. Louis.

Founded on February 14, 1764 by Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, our city has been making history ever since. From fur trading post to Gateway to the West — we ❤️ STL!
