History A St. Louis icon, our building became a St. Louis landmark when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 due to the building’s rich history and beautiful features. The building was erected in 1903 for the Roberts, Johnson and Rand Shoe Company, a shoe manufacturing company that later became the International Shoe Company in 1911. The five-story brick industrial building was one of the first St. Louis factories specifically designed for shoe production. St. Louis soon evolved from a distribution center for companies in the east to a booming manufacturing hub. The International Shoe Company emerged as the largest single shoe manufacturer in the country and was a major contributor to the St. Louis economy. In 2002, the building was renovated into luxury one and two bedroom loft apartments. This former shoe factory transformed into an ideal location that makes the perfect home for those who desire urban living. We welcome you to come by for a visit and tour of our loft apartments. The Lofts at Lafayette Square offers our residents a variety of floor plan options and look forward to walking you through this historic structure full of beautiful features and amenities.
