St. Paul Island Tour is hiring!

We are currently seeking a tour guide for the 2026 fall season. Opportunities like this do not come around often, making this a rare chance to live and work on the incredible St. Paul Island in the Bering Sea. The ideal candidate will have strong people skills, birding experience, and the ability to thrive in a very remote Alaska Native community with limited amenities. This position is perfect for someone who is adaptable, passionate about wildlife and ecotourism, and loves searching for rare vagrants. Candidates must be available to travel to Anchorage on July 28, and the position will run through approximately early to mid-October.

If you have some downtime in Anchorage before you head out to St. Paul, there's certainly a lot you can do. One thing you can put on your list is a visit to the Anchorage Museum to see an original Henry Wood Elliott featuring the Pribilof Islands, titled π‘‡β„Žπ‘’ πΉπ‘’π‘Ÿ π‘†π‘’π‘Žπ‘™ π‘€π‘–π‘™π‘™π‘–π‘œπ‘›π‘ . Henry Wood Elliott was a pioneer in protecting the Northern Fur Seals and eventually co-authored the first international treaty protecting the species. The Anchorage Museum is free to visit on the first Friday of each month from 6-9 p.m. and you can find this work in the π΄π‘Ÿπ‘‘ π‘œπ‘“ π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ π‘π‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘‘β„Ž gallery.

Check out some more very cool sea ice imagery from the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS)! You can see St. George Island on the left side of the frame engulfed in sea ice on the northern shoreline. St. Paul is out of the frame to the north, completely surrounded by pack ice. This is the largest extent of sea ice in the eastern Bering Sea in 15 years, but it won't be long before the rising sun starts fighting back. Historically, even Polar Bears could reach the Pribilof Islands on the ice, with the last confirmed sighting in 1915.

The eastern Bering Sea is experiencing near record ice at an extent not seen in 15 years. Expect the ice to continue advancing southward through the week. North winds will continue to strip ice off of the main pack where it will decay rapidly in warmer waters.

The Bering Sea ice pack reached St. Paul Island yesterday for the second time this season! Sea ice reaching St. Paul only happens in about half the years on record and is the leading hypothesis for how Arctic Foxes were able to reach the island. Continued north winds and cold temperatures may have the ice pack at St. George Island by early next week. Strong ice pack years help reflect more sunlight and keep the ocean colder, which is crucial for marine life, among many other benefits.

One of the finer things in life is a beautiful summer evening spent with puffins, auklets, kittiwakes, murres, and more. Those who have visited St. Paul before may recognize this spot as Ridge Wall, one of the most classic sites to visit the famous seabird colonies our island is known for. The promontory in the photo provides a perfect viewpoint from which to look back at the cliffs.

Did you know that St. Paul and St. George are the only communities in Alaska that require extended overwater certification for commercial flights? Flights to St. Paul cover about 300 miles of travel over the Bering Sea. Congratulations to the Aleutian Airways team on their successful demonstration of the safety capabilities needed for their new route to St. Paul!
