We took a break from snowshoeing and went skiing yesterday at Winman Trails. Ski and fat tire bike trails are impeccably groomed and in excellent condition! It's great to see this place grow and develop. Thank you Winman!

Happy February 1! Of Pumpkins, Trails, Snow Moons, & Thoughts that traverse my mind on Near Full Moon Nights....

Pumpkins: Coming up in my feed lately are pics of these little pumpkins who've been here for winter sports in the Northwoods!

Trail: Other pics are some of my favorites from the snowshoe trail this and last year, particularly at dusk and on "moony" nights.

We were out yesterday (Jan31) and find that it is in good shape! 5 mi nicely packed! It's a good diverse run of woods and logging roads. And as always, it's QUIET and far far away from noise of all sorts...

"Moony" nights: I adore them. Particularly in the winter. The still whiteness all awash in the moonlight. Magical, ethereal.., so filled with HOPE.

Lovely as these moony nights are, they also make me restless. I walk outside in the middle of the night to gaze up and out to soak it all up--that "warm" glow, the stillness.

Toward the trail I walked last night, coat thrown over my pj's, bare feet in boots. Then figured maybe I wasn't quite dressed/prepared for a midnight jaunt in the woods...

Came back in, googled "full moon in February." It's called the Snow Moon, and the significance of its meaning so struck me: "symbolic of patience, resilience, endurance required to survive the harshest part of winter.., potential for renewal.... upcoming change.... Clarity and Stillness: The stark, cold landscape encourages clearing away distractions to focus on what truly matters. A reminder that growth is occurring, even if it is hidden...steady towards rejuvenation."

And I thought of how much this reflected Minneapolis.

And in a broader context, for our country, how much I'd like to think we're in the Time of the Snow Moon...

So maybe tonight under a glorious full Snow Moon, we can collectively send prayers and supportive energy to Minneapolis. What have we got to lose in trying?

Incidentally, the Snow Moon of 2026 falls in Leo, "a fire sign known for creativity, confidence and 'inner lion' energy." That said, a little personal roar might be in order tonight.

Oh, the things you learn on a restless moony night....

Usually, our threshhold is 15 degrees for outside activities.., but when the week's temp lineup is 7, 1, 1, -14, 5, 1, 2..., well, 7 looks pretty good!

As always, the stillness, the whiteness of our NHAL Trail with at least 18" of snow....so grounding and exhilarating.

Face masks, throat coats, heavy mitts, socks, headbands to cover the ears and LAYERS of clothes can still make an outing in this weather pleasant! Stay safe and warm everyone!

Fat bike loops were groomed this morning. Low psi recommended. Snowshoe loops are well-packed.

Trails in the Area Update

Here is an update on all of the winter trail systems in our area!

Manitowish Waters Sno-Skeeters Snowmobile Club: January 2nd
All Sno-Skeeters trails were groomed overnight Thursday. Cold temperatures should help hold the trails together longer. But expect high traffic throughout the weekend! Please ride safe and on the right side of the trail always!

WinMan Trails : January 2nd
Ski Trails
ALL TRAILS OPEN
Current Condition:
We used the power tiller this morning to freshen up the skate deck and reset classic tracks. Coverage is excellent, and the base is very firm. It’s cold out there today, but the sun is shining and calling your name.

Fat Bike Trails
MOST TRAILS OPEN
CLOSED - Flowage
Current Condition - All fat bike trails are open except Flowage. Tuesday, groomers made countless passes to pack the snow down, and all open trails were groomed at least twice again Wednesday morning.
Conditions have firmed up over the week, with a solid 2–3" crust with snowpack on top. For the best riding experience, and to protect the base, it’s essential to run very low tire pressure (3–5 PSI max).

Snowshoe Trails
OPEN - WinMan Passage (blue loop), Lake Loop (green loop), Glacial Erratic (pink route) Marshmallow Connector (orange route) and Marshmallow Loop (yellow loop)
CLOSED - All other trails

Current Condition - Conditions are ideal after the snowfall earlier this week, and the woods are absolutely beautiful right now.

Sledding Hill
OPEN - The sledding hill saw a lot of traffic this week and is packed down tight. Please use caution today, conditions have become faster as the week has gone on. Have fun and sled smart!

North Lakeland Discovery Center :
About 12 inches of fresh snow fell Dec. 28-29. Statehouse Lake Loop Trail is groomed and tracked for skiing. Snowshoe Loop and Interpretive trails are open for snowshoeing. Conditions are moderate.

MECCA Trails: January 2nd
Trails are in great shape. Groomers are out this morning re-setting track and renovating/combing the skate lanes on the system’s 21 kilometers. With temperatures dropping into the single digits at night pole plants and skate lanes are firm. Conditions are excellent.
