Sustained Outdoor Learning will be hosting 2 sessions at Sunshine Springs Farm this summer! The farm is just 15 minutes southwest of Staunton- a great location for Stanton residents and those in the south end of the county. Northern locations include: Natural Chimneys and Crimora Park.

Just submitted my Ghost Pipe illustration for the t-shirt design contest 🤍

This is one of my favorite wildflowers. I even have a tattoo of them on my arm! They grow on the forest floor of our pine woods at the farm and I used my photos from the farm for reference material.

Got my wildflower seeds sown just in time to be covered by a blanket of snow. The freeze/thaw cycle over the next few months will help work the seeds into the ground and offers cold temps that many native wildflowers need in order to germinate come spring.

This is my first rodeo with wildflowers but the instructions were pretty easy to follow. Mix your seed with sand 1:8, spread evenly in 2 directions, and tamp/compress for good soil contact (I used the tractor tires for quick compression). Do not cover with straw or mulch.

Hopefully this summer we will have a native wildflower meadow! 🤞🏻

Ever wonder what birds don’t migrate south for the winter? Or what animals visit a local field, even when it’s cold outside? Or what kinds of trees are in your backyard? Our world is filled with things to WONDER about! In this program, we’ll take an inquiry approach to exploring all the questions we wonder about our natural world. Through observations using all five senses, detailed notetaking and guided inquiry, we’ll explore the winter WONDERland right outside our door.

Participants are asked to bring a packed lunch, wear comfortable shoes and come dressed for outdoor exploration. The instructor is environmental educator and certified elementary teacher Meredith McCool, Program
Director for Sunshine Springs Farm. Register by December 29.

Thank you to those who have supported our BarnRasier shirt campaign!! The first batch should be on their way to you! The campaign is still open and will run until restoration wraps next spring. Shirts will print in batches and ship out every 15 days thanks to 🔗in bio

Barn restoration has begun at Sunshine Springs Farm! This restoration will be a months-long process, completed in phases. We are currently in phase 1.

Phase 1: new siding & doors, forebay support repairs, new gutters and downspouts, gathering space improvements for safety by

Phase 2: pest treatment for powder post beetles and termites by our favorite exterminator, Ladybugs LLC

Phase 3: foundation repointing

Phase 4: roof sealing and painting

We should be wrapping up just in time to welcome kids for Meredith’s SOL summer camps, the first of many groups to enjoy our farm and all it has to offer 💛

Planning for the future this year has been… interesting. I don’t know what the next year will bring, but I know we stand by our mission to lead with love and we are just going to keep doing the next right thing.

For us, the next right thing is restoring our historic barn so that we can welcome kids to the farm for Meredith’s summer camps.

Our barn features a German folk art hex with the trinity of tulips. This symbol reminds us to have faith in ourselves, faith in what we do, and faith in our fellow man. 💛

We are so grateful for the love on our BarnRaiser campaign, and we are looking forward to sharing the project with you.

Help us preserve our historic barn to create an outdoor classroom and gathering space! From our research, we believe the barn and farmhouse at Sunshine Springs Farm were constructed in the early 1800s by Shenandoah German settlers (a continuation southward of the Pennsylvania “Dutch”). The bank barn contains the original double-pen log structure with hand-hewn log beams and limestone foundation. We will make much-needed repairs to the foundation, install new siding and gutters, and repoint the limestone foundation. The low side of the bank barn will become an outdoor classroom and community gathering space, providing a welcoming place for folks to connect and share ideas. The shirt design was drawn by Caroline of Working House and features our historic barn as well as the “trinity of tulips” common in German folk art. The trinity represents faith in yourself, faith in what you do, and faith in your fellow man. This limited edition Working House shirt features a German folk art tulip and serpent logo on the back. Thank you for your help preserving this amazing piece of history for generations to come!
