The magic found during summertime in Steamboat Springs doesn’t end after Labor Day – instead, it turns into the golden days of fall. It’s the perfect time of year for a long hike or a bike ride (check page 24 for recommendations) and it’s a great time to check out all Steamboat has to offer. While you’re here, try one of these fall events.

Steamboat OktoberWest is a highly anticipated annual event that will take place Friday-Saturday, Sept. 11-12. The weekend kicks off with a beer stroll downtown and is followed on Saturday by different experiences (choose your own!) including a beer garden, tastings and games. For tickets and more info, visit www.steamboatchamber.com.

Book lovers will want to experience Literary Sojourn, Steamboat’s own festival of authors. This year’s authors include a Pulitzer Prize winner, a bestseller and a “New Yorker” staff writer. Visit www.literarysojourn.org for dates and tickets.

Stop by Steamboat Art Museum to view plein air works from local and national artists who travel to town in September to paint during the annual festival. Afterwards, their pieces are displayed in the museum, this year through Saturday, Oct. 31.

Foodies will want to attend the Steamboat Food & Wine Festival, held Thursday-Sunday, Oct. 1-4. Stay for Restaurant Week, which takes place Saturday-Saturday, Oct. 3-10. Make reservations in advance to taste chef’s special creations and snag some can’t-miss deals. For more information, visit www.mainstreetsteamboat.com.

Fall in Steamboat ends right around Halloween, usually with snow just int ime for the downtown Halloween Stroll. But Steamboat kids are tough – you’ll find them trick-or-treating down Lincoln Avenue from 5-7 p.m. as local businesses open their doors and get the candy out.

It's patio season! Here's where to enjoy al fresco meals all day long in Steamboat Springs.

Breakfast
Belly up to breakfast at Yampa Valley Kitchen where the chefs use as many local ingredients as possible to create delectable dishes like omelets, benedicts and crêpes. Bonus: A patio seat means a spot right in the middle of the garden among the fresh herbs, plants and flowers.

Lunch
Head to the base of the mountain where post-hike or bike, you can snag a patio seat at Los Locos to refuel with tacos and margs. Next door is Slopeside, where you’ll find pizzas, wings, salads and burgers. While parents sit in the shade and sip cool drinks, kids can run around in the grass and splash in the stream known as Burgess Creek Beach.

Happy Hour
Stop by Mountain Tap for local beer, wood-fired pizzas and small plate snacks. The family-style tables out front can accommodate larger groups and there are games inside to bring out to the table while you wait. Get up even higher on the rooftop of Salt & Lime. You’ll get a killer view of downtown Steamboat and Sleeping Giant in the distance, served up with ice cold margaritas and housemade guacamole.

Dinner
At Aurum Food & Wine, the patio offers a front row seat to watch the Yampa River flow by – wave to those kayakers as they pass by. Mambo is in the heart of downtown, serving up classic Italian fare under string lights on their front porch. E3 Chophouse offers hearty steaks – and classic chophouse fare – also with a side of fantastic river views. Locals’ tip: for dinners outside, bring an extra layer; once that sun dips down behind the mountains, the temps will drop lower.

Old Town Hot Springs
Soak, splash and swim at this Steamboat landmark. The site was first discovered by the Utes, who visited the springs for physical and spiritual healing. Now the whole family can enjoy multiple pools (including a splash pool for toddlers), a climbing wall (ring the bell when you make it to the top!) and two mighty waterslides. Bring a lunch – coolers with outside food and drink are permitted but leave the alcohol and glass at home. For daily ticket prices and more info, visit www.oldtownhotsprings.org.

Mountain Fun
Cool off at Burgess Creek Beach at the base of the mountain, where kids can dig in the sand and splash in the water. Bonus: Parents can grab a drink from nearby Slopeside or Los Locos and bring it beach-side.

Steamboat Climbing Collective
Get out of the hot sun and get on the climbing wall. Drop in during the week from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. or on Sundays from 10:30 a.m.-6 pm. It’s recommended to check the website first to make sure a large group isn’t already using the space. Adults cost $19.50 while kids are $13 (ask about discounted rates) and shoes are $3 to rent. A parent or guardian will need to sign a waiver and be present for the session. Half- and full-day camp options are also available. Visit www.steamboatclimbingcollective.com to sign up.

Snow Bowl
If you’re looking for a rainy day or indoor activity, head to Snow Bowl and grab a lane. But don’t stop there – grab a cold drink and some food while you’re at it. Snow Bowl is a bowling alley that’s known for its menu – and its music. On Wednesdays and Saturdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day, check out the band on the outdoor stage.
