WE are having a LABOR DAY CELEBRATION at BARTHELL COAL MINE CAMP IN MCCREARY COUNTY YOU ARE INVITED TO COME AND SING

BARTHELL CELEBRATES LABOR DAY

McCreary County was built by brave men who spent their lives moving coal from the seams along the Big South Fork River to the railroad cars of corporate giants like the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company. Others felled giant oaks and hemlocks and turned them into crossties, mine supports, and coal tipples. Theirs was a hazardous profession, marked by disabling accidents, debilitating illnesses, and an ever-present uncertainty about their economic future. Waiting for them at home were sturdy women who watched, each day, as their husbands and fathers departed for the mines and log woods, not knowing if they would ever see their loved ones alive again.

If you are one of those noble men and women who worked in the coal mines or log woods of McCreary County, or if you are a descendant of one of them, you owe it to yourself to visit Barthell Coal Camp on Labor Day. There, the lives of those people will be celebrated and honored. So, come on down and spend the day with us. We want to hear your stories. While you are here, take time to visit the Barthell company store and see what could be purchased with company scrip. Sit in the company school and church house and recall the days when education was precious and religious services were the highlight of the week. Stop at the doctor’s office and let the company doctor give you a check-up. Watch energy-filled children play traditional games in the school playground, or join in and show them how it is done. Bring your musical instrument and show your talent on the open stage beside the K. & T. Railroad track. Greet the train as it passes through Barthell on the Scenic Railroad. Enjoy pinto beans and cornbread at the Barthell restaurant, and, perhaps, one of Donna’s fried pies. Sit beside the soothing waters of Roaring Paunch Creek and toss your cares to the wind while you relax beneath the towering hemlocks and sweet gums that shade the streets of Barthell.

Admission to Barthell Coal Camp is always free, but guided tours of the mine and museum will incur a small fee. Barthell takes pride in being a family-friendly place to visit so, please remember that no alcoholic beverages are permitted on the grounds.
