Walking down into a massive cave mouth with a waterfall cascading just to your left is exactly what you can do at Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave, where more than 426 miles of underground passages have been mapped beneath the rolling hills. It is the longest known cave system on Earth, and new sections are still being found. Ranger-led tours can take you past huge rooms, tight passageways, old saltpeter mining remains, historic signatures, and formations such as Frozen Niagara and the Drapery Room. The Historic Entrance is the cave system’s largest natural opening, and Native Americans were entering here thousands of years ago. The waterfall beside the entrance flows year-round, though it can shrink to a trickle during dry weather. Mammoth Cave became a national park in 1941 and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. Even the name “Mammoth” has nothing to do with woolly mammoths...it was chosen because of the enormous size of the cave’s chambers and passageways.
