Funds from this raffle go toward improvements of the Steinhatchee Little House Library, Welcome Center & Historical Gallery. We have already installed a split unit to keep the library cool in the summer and warm in the winter. We've installed a storm door so that volunteers can still see outside while staying comfortable inside. Next up is painting the exterior which it badly needs. Painting is scheduled to begin after the Fiddler Crab Festival.
Originally built as a home in circa 1900, the structure was eventually moved from further in town to its current location and has served multiple purposes. At one time it functioned as a clinic - affectionately known as "the shot house." Once a month or so, a doctor would travel to Steinhatchee and use the building to give local children their required inoculations. A recent visitor to the library recalled the days she herself lined up in wait for her shots. She pointed out where the table stood where needles were lined up and ready. The table was next to the window and on more than one occasion, according to the visitor, children would try to climb out the window to avoid getting their shots.
Since its days as a "shot house", it has served as a voting precinct, a chamber office, storage room, and now its current use as a community library and welcome center.
Thank you for supporting the continued use of this historic spot in Steinhatchee.
