Quick report from my 3-day scouting mission in the North Maine Woods this week:

I stayed at Camel Brook Camps in Fort Kent for all three days. Comfortable lodging and a convenient jumping-off point for the North Maine Woods and hundreds of miles of upland cover.

Yes, we have birds.

I had grouse flushes and woodcock in almost every spot where I put the dogs down. I also saw some road birds—not a ton, but after spending three days in the woods, I think I know why.

Most of the birds I encountered were young, like the one in the photos, and they were holding tight in heavy cover. There is still so much foliage that they really didn't want to fly until I was almost on top of them. When they did flush, many went straight into a nearby tree or stayed just above the cover.

Obviously, those conditions should improve as October moves along and more leaves come off.

This trip was mostly about scouting areas for our bird camps later this month. In many of these covers I made a quick walk, and if it produced a couple of flushes, I marked it on the map and kept moving. The goal was finding birds and building a list of productive covers—not hunting them hard.

Here’s a look back at a busy month on the water. The nights are getting cooler, the water temperatures are beginning to follow, and wildlife sightings have been excellent. Loons, eagles, and a group of four ospreys highlighted a recent Bangor-area fishing trip.

Several gnat hatches also had fish feeding in a frenzy on the surface for multiple days. There’s still plenty of bait around, and the fish are stacked up and feeding well.

September is one of Maine’s best months to fish—cooler weather, beautiful scenery, and hungry fish before they begin settling into their wintering areas.

I'm getting so bad at updating my Instagram. We are still rock steady and on the water at least 5 days a week. Here's a few good ones from June.

As always, I can't express just how grateful I am for every one that decides to take a fishing adventure with me.

July is off to a hot start and lots of fishing days left this summer. The fish may be deeper, but we have the equipment to get you down there for the best opportunity.
