5/27/25 Richland Chambers

This morning I picked up Dan and his grandson Mason at Oak Cove Marina. We left the dock about 6:15 for a morning of catch and release hybrid fishing.

I started by looking for schooling fish busting shad on the surface……we never saw any of that action, so we put away the casting gear and switched to live bait rods. We set up in 37’ and dropped baits. It wasn’t long before I was netting fish and baiting hooks. Dan then says we would like to keep a couple - before long they had limits in the cooler.
We never went after white bass today and just hybrid fished all morning.
I would estimate 30ish keepers were boated today along with blue and channel cats and white bass.

We went to my dock to clean fish and then I dropped them off at their dock when we were done

I still have lots of weekdays available in June. Schools out and those kids want to be on the water!
Let’s go catching!

‘Just needed a little help pushing through’
Limits of hybrids and white bass

This morning I had a first time ever experience catching bait, more on that later. Anyways bait got caught and I picked up Daniel, his daughter Anderson and his son Barrett. They fished with me last year and had an excellent trip with limits of both hybrids and white bass, so I needed to do at least excellent if not better😂. We left Oak Cove Marina about 6:15 in search of hybrid stripers.

I wanted to avoid the crowds again today, and we set up 1/4 mile from the closest ‘boat show’. We were in 27’ when Barrett puts back to back keepers in the boat, one being a donkey of a fish. Then the white bass moved in. A few minutes later I got a call from a fellow guide who I helped out yesterday, he returned the favor and 30 minutes later they had 15 hybrid stripers in the cooler.
Anderson I believe put the most hybrids in the cooler, but Barrett put the biggest in there! Daniel put a few in as well, but he usually stepped out of the way so his kids could catch the fish

We switched to white bass and moved across the lake. We fished 3 areas today - mainly 20-28’. We used both MAL lures and live bait today. All three of them caught fish on artificial and live bait. I think another 4 keeper hybrids were caught and released at our final area. Barrett was best with artificial and Anderson was loading the cooler with the live bait rod. Daniel….well I am glad he enjoyed watching his kids catch fish because they out fished him for sure!😝. I look forward to seeing them again next year!

Now the catching bait experience:

So up before the alarm and on the water just like usual - catching good size bait was tougher this morning. Then I slide my hand down the cast net and find that there’s a hook in it…….so I didnt just poke my finger, its 1.5” from entry to exit and its in deep. Point is sticking out, but not the barb. No way it’s getting pulled out, it has to go through. I grab my cutters and when I cut the eye off the hook so it can be pushed through, it pulled the tip back into my finger. That easy push through just became a little more of an issue. I try, but I can’t do it. I see my buddy pull up to catch bait and told him I needed his help. He was not crazy about helping out, but agreed, with a little push by him and a few strong words by me it was out …and I was back to catching bait. Thanks JD for helping me push through! I just blamed all the blood on the boat from the fish. I have been poked by hooks numerous times, but this is the first time I have ever had one past the barb- for the record, I don’t recommend it 😂.

5/24/25 Richland Chambers

This morning Christopher brought out a crew(family and friends) to fish with me. This crew included young Joshua who had never caught a fish before. He would be my focus today ….he will get extra attention. We left Oak Cove Marina a little before 6:30 in search of hybrid stripers.

Being it’s a holiday weekend I chose to avoid the boat shows and try to find fish in different less traveled areas. Well it was slow for a while. Then I made a big move, other side of the lake and I found a massive school of fish! I told them to grab a rod and hand me hooks, fast!! They put the remaining 24 fish they needed for their hybrid limit in the cooler as fast as I could unhook and rebait. It was hectic there for a bit. Joshua was seeming to really like fishing and he put a beating on the big hybrids!

We switched over to spinning gear with MAL lures and after a very short learning curve everyone started catching fish - but ‘never caught a fish before’ Joshua shined here! Not only did he catch lots of white bass, he caught a huge crappie and short hybrids as well. My goal of all my trips is to make sure any youngsters on my boat get ‘hooked’ and want to fish the rest of their lives. I think I got it done today!

5/22/25 Richland Chambers

This morning sweet little Aurora came back to fish with me again. She brought Deven(Dad) Peewee(grandpa) and Damon (uncle I believe)

We left the dock about 6:15, I told Deven I wasn’t sure if we would have an artificial bite this morning but we were going to try. I pulled into the area and the water was smooth, no action and then 5 minutes later they started popping on the surface. Today was a mix of white bass and short hybrids with the occasional keeper hybrid mixed in. They kept me busy unhooking fish for about 15 minutes - and then it was over.
Zman Streakz did the job here.

I was feeling pretty confident we would get them easily on live bait so we made the switch. I was wrong. Keeper hybrids would swim by our baits and the white bass were eating them. We moved lots of times before I finally got the hybrid stripers to turn on. Then it was pretty good action the rest of the trip.
21’ seemed to be the best depth.

Today was a much much slower day than the weeks past. Last trip Aurora named all the fish, and ran out of names - today she napped alot😂
We never went specifically after white bass today.

All fish were released

5/21/25 Richland Chambers

This morning I picked up John and his 3 grandkids at Fisherman's Cove Lodge. We left the dock about 6:15.
John told me he would prefer live bait for hybrids and not do any casting, so the early start wasn’t as important.

First stop was 19’. Baits went down, rod tips went down, too quick grabbing the poles and no fish came in. Went back over when to grab the rod/ hookset and we tried it again - baits went down and so did the rod tips …… then I stayed busy for about 30-45 minutes. Net fish, rebait, net fish, make my way to the cooler, rebait, net fish …… like Bill Murray in ground hogs day😂
We should have had limits on our first stop, but the learn curve cost us the first few. We left here with 14 hybrid stripers in the cooler.

Stops 2 & 3 were not great for hybrids- caught some good white bass and another hybrid.

Stop four in 24’ was just like the first stop - baits go down followed by almost immediate rod tip to the water - finished out the hybrid striper limits here.

I put up the live bait gear and we switched to MAL equipped spinning gear. With the almost dead calm lake, the white bass were very finicky! Some stops we would get 15 good keepers and 15 throw backs and then they would quit - not leave, just quit even acknowledging there is lure going up and down in front of them. I am not talking about 1 or 2 fish, I am taking about over 100. Some schools were more active than others - some not at all.
We fished 3 areas today mostly from 17-26’. I think they took home 71 white bass and 20 hybrids . They had limits if I kept 10” fish

State of the lake

4” over full pool. 2 gates open
Gates will more than likely remain open for at least another week as they pass through flood waters being held back by Navarro Mills and Bardwell.

Took yesterday and today off. (I reserve 2 days a week as ‘off’ days) Yesterday was maintenance Monday and Tray helped me replaced my lift cables on the dock. I do this twice a year as the cables get frayed from constant use. We have a good system to replace the cables and if we rush it could be done in 2hrs…..but without rushing it’s about a 3hr job.

Today is scheduled doggy day!

Be back out fishing tomorrow

I have lots of weekdays in June available and open weekend dates in July!

This morning Bobby and Billy returned and brought Ben along.

We left my dock about 6am. We started with artificial and they put 7 hybrid stripers in the cooler with Zman Streakz. We used live bait to put the remaining 8 in the cooler.

We had put 25 white bass in the cooler while hybrid fishing, we needed 50 more! I switched everyone to MAL lures and we hopped around one area mainly 19-23’. They easily got those 50 fish plus probably released around as many!

These guys love fishing!

I have lots of weekdays available in June! Schools almost out - LETS GO CATCHING!

5/16/25 Richland Chambers

Finally the boat is back on the dock.

This morning my regular fishing group of Adrian and Dan brought out Hoss and Julio to join them. We left the dock a little after 6am and I went to where I had good action a few days ago. I had Wednesday and Thursday off so I wasn’t sure what to expect.

We pulled up and I saw fish on sonar so I handed out Zman Streakz equipped rods and had them cast to where they showed to be on sonar. They never schooled on the surface, but they put 7 in the cooler on artificial before 7am……..then the grind started. We would find then, drop baits and they would look at baits and swim off. Big gizzards, little gizzards, big threads, little threads - didn’t matter. I had all sizes covered - I just couldn’t find the ones that wanted to eat good today. I was frustrated to say the least.
We got hybrid limits and a bunch of white bass, but we spent the full trip targeting reluctant to bite hybrids.

We fished deep, we fished shallow - it was a grind to get their hybrid striper limits for me today.

Even on a tough day - we catch lots of fish!
Let’s go catching!

‘Tough day on the lake!’

I was on the water at 4am….just woke up early before the alarm so I got in the truck. Caught mixed bag of huge threadfin shad and gizzards about the same size (5”)
Had nothing but big baits so I stepped down to a 3/8” net and put a load of smaller baits in the tank. I was tied to the dock about 5am. It was rough in the dark (winds)

Today I had Heath,Lisa, RJ from yesterday and Brandon joined them today. Heath really wanted Brandon to experience what they did yesterday, I told him conditions were not the same and with the winds we might not be able to see it. We left the dock just before 6am. I had already told another guide I didn’t think my area was gonna play so he should expect me to join him.
We got about half way through our journey, full trim tabs spearing waves and then it got ‘smoothish’. Gave it some throttle, let up on the trim tabs and my outlook changed on the morning!

This is where it gets tough! We pulled up, I dropped the trolling motor - hand out rods and said gettem’ out there. For the next 30 minutes I netted fish, re-tied lines, netted more fish, chased fish, netted fish
6:40am fifteen good hybrid stripers in the cooler and it’s gone quiet ….. for a few minutes and then I was chasing fish, netting fish, tying on new lures ……and that’s 20 in the cooler and 4 or 5 keepers released 7:05am! Lisa took top honors with the 2 biggest fish of the day!
All fish caught on Zman Streakz in 4-24 foot of water.

It was tough on me😎….but I love that action!
Brandon says ‘wow you were really working to take care of us!’ I said ‘thanks but we are just getting started - you’re about to see me really work!’

I switched everyone to MAL lures and we started after the white bass.
We had 2.5 hrs and we needed 89 fish for their limits. First area we fished mainly 24’ in a few different spots - I released way more than I put in the cooler searching for 13”+. It was constant action I was between the 4 of them bouncing from person to person like a crackhead😂 but once the bigger fish moved out the 10-12” fish swarmed in. We left them biting in search of bigger fish. We needed about 50 more better than average fish.
2nd and final area we made 3 stops - with 15 minutes left the had their white bass limits and said we are done! Which was awesome because I was pretty much done as well! Pretty sure 300+ fish were boated today! RJ took top honors for landing all the 15-16” white bass today!

We went back to Oak Cove Marina, I cleaned fish while they checked out of the motel and then they booked 3 days in April 2026😎!

Sunday June 20th is my next available weekend date. I have lots of weekdays left in June

5/12/25 Richland Chambers

This morning I picked up Heath, Lisa and RJ at Oak Cove Marina. They let me know they were waiting …. way early - so I got cleaned up after catching bait and off we went.

We got to the same area the magic had been happening early - I had them blind cast for a bit and then it started! I was running from person to person netting fish! Fish flopping all over the deck and I started releasing 19” fish …… bad idea! Surface feed was short lived and when it was over we only had 11 in the cooler——because I was tossing keepers 😞 all fish caught on Zman Streakz in less than 8’ of water

We switched to live bait and found fish on the bottom in 38’ which kind of shocked me since it was still early.
We finished out the hybrid striper limits and went to target white bass.

As we were going to my white bass area I saw birds working - so we put the Streakz back to work. These fish were mostly white bass, but we caught a few hybrids as well. It died and the rest of the morning we fished one area - mainly 28-32’ all these fish were caught on MAL lures. They took home limits of white bass (75) as well. I estimate they caught 200 white bass to get 75 - 13” or better for the cooler! They only caught 1 fish that wasnt 10”!

Everything I use is available at Richland Chambers Bait and Tackle. Tell them I sent you and they will know what you want.😎

I have lots of weekdays in June and Sunday June 20th is still available.
