‘Just needed a little help pushing through’
Limits of hybrids and white bass
This morning I had a first time ever experience catching bait, more on that later. Anyways bait got caught and I picked up Daniel, his daughter Anderson and his son Barrett. They fished with me last year and had an excellent trip with limits of both hybrids and white bass, so I needed to do at least excellent if not better😂. We left Oak Cove Marina about 6:15 in search of hybrid stripers.
I wanted to avoid the crowds again today, and we set up 1/4 mile from the closest ‘boat show’. We were in 27’ when Barrett puts back to back keepers in the boat, one being a donkey of a fish. Then the white bass moved in. A few minutes later I got a call from a fellow guide who I helped out yesterday, he returned the favor and 30 minutes later they had 15 hybrid stripers in the cooler.
Anderson I believe put the most hybrids in the cooler, but Barrett put the biggest in there! Daniel put a few in as well, but he usually stepped out of the way so his kids could catch the fish
We switched to white bass and moved across the lake. We fished 3 areas today - mainly 20-28’. We used both MAL lures and live bait today. All three of them caught fish on artificial and live bait. I think another 4 keeper hybrids were caught and released at our final area. Barrett was best with artificial and Anderson was loading the cooler with the live bait rod. Daniel….well I am glad he enjoyed watching his kids catch fish because they out fished him for sure!😝. I look forward to seeing them again next year!
Now the catching bait experience:
So up before the alarm and on the water just like usual - catching good size bait was tougher this morning. Then I slide my hand down the cast net and find that there’s a hook in it…….so I didnt just poke my finger, its 1.5” from entry to exit and its in deep. Point is sticking out, but not the barb. No way it’s getting pulled out, it has to go through. I grab my cutters and when I cut the eye off the hook so it can be pushed through, it pulled the tip back into my finger. That easy push through just became a little more of an issue. I try, but I can’t do it. I see my buddy pull up to catch bait and told him I needed his help. He was not crazy about helping out, but agreed, with a little push by him and a few strong words by me it was out …and I was back to catching bait. Thanks JD for helping me push through! I just blamed all the blood on the boat from the fish. I have been poked by hooks numerous times, but this is the first time I have ever had one past the barb- for the record, I don’t recommend it 😂.
