At sunset tomorrow October 15th, the Southwest Louisiana NWR Complex will close to boating through March 15.

All interior boat launches throughout the refuge complex, including those at Sabine NWR and Lacassine NWR, will close for the season.

🦆 Annual Winter Refuge Closures Begin Oct. 15🦆

Planning a fall or winter adventure along the Creole Nature Trail? Please note that the Southwest Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge Complex’s annual winter closure to fishing and boating begins one hour after sunset on Thursday, October 15, 2026, and continues through March 15, 2027.

The closure includes designated areas of:
🎣 Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge
🌾 Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge’s Gibbstown Unit
🐊 Sabine National Wildlife Refuge’s interior marshes and waterways

The good news for wildlife watchers: many popular spots remain open for exploring! Sabine NWR’s Wetland Walkway and Blue Goose Trail remain open year-round from sunrise to sunset for wildlife observation and photography, and the Lacassine Wildlife Drive also remains open year-round.

Some designated fishing, crabbing and waterfowl hunting access remains available during the closure, with specific regulations depending on the refuge and area.

Before heading out, we recommend checking current U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service regulations and access information for the Southwest Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

Great news! 🎉

Great news for the Cameron Prairie Visitor Center!

Thanks to our recent partnership with the Cameron Parish Tourism Commission, the Visitor Center will now be open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., beginning today. We are grateful for their commitment to working alongside us to welcome visitors and keep the center thriving. Stop by and say hello—we are excited to greet you together!

🌙🦅 Lights out for migration! Millions of birds are taking to the skies as fall migration ramps up, and Southwest Louisiana is an important stop along the way.

Here on the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road, we have a front-row seat to one of nature’s greatest journeys. Tonight, consider turning off unnecessary outdoor lights, closing blinds and reducing light pollution to help migrating birds safely navigate their way south.

A little darkness can make a big difference for our feathered visitors. 💚🦆

🦀 Crab lines are dropping and ice chests are filling up across Southwest Louisiana!

We’re in the height of crabbing season, which means it’s also an important time to take care of the marshes and waterways that make this tradition possible.

As you head out along the Creole Nature Trail, remember to Leave No Trace. Pack out everything you bring in, including fishing line, bait containers, food wrappers and bottles. Better yet, bring an extra trash bag and pick up anything others may have left behind.

Respect the wildlife, take only what you need, and leave these special places better than you found them. A little effort from each of us goes a long way toward keeping Southwest Louisiana wild and beautiful. 🌾💚

⚠️ REFUGE CLOSURE | SEPTEMBER 1

Due to Tropical Storm Edouard and anticipated impacts across Southwest Louisiana, the Southwest Louisiana National Wildlife Refuges Complex will be closed today, Tuesday, September 1.

This includes public access to:
• Sabine National Wildlife Refuge
• Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge
• Lacassine National Wildlife Refuge

Please avoid refuge areas during the storm and continue to monitor official weather and emergency updates. We’ll share additional information regarding reopening as it becomes available.

Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge Access Update 🐊

Planning a trip to Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge next week? Please be aware of temporary access restrictions during the refuge’s annual controlled alligator harvest.

📅 September 2–9, 2026
⏰ Refuge access will be restricted until noon each day.
✅ Visitors may enter the refuge after 12 p.m.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has confirmed these temporary morning restrictions to allow permitted trappers to safely conduct the controlled harvest. Restrictions could be lifted earlier if all state-issued tags are filled before September 9.

Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge stretches along approximately 26 miles of Louisiana’s coast across Cameron and Vermilion parishes and is a popular stop along the Creole Nature Trail for wildlife watching, fishing, crabbing and experiencing Louisiana’s coastal marshes.

Along the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road, wetlands, wildlife habitats, beaches and waterways create an unforgettable landscape while supporting countless species and communities across Southwest Louisiana.

You can help preserve these natural treasures by leaving no trace, properly disposing of waste, respecting wildlife from a safe distance and leaving plants, shells and other natural objects where you find them.

Small actions today can make a lasting difference for generations of explorers to come. 💚
