My dad taught me how to fish, throw a ball, ride a bike, change a tire, and make a sales call. He was a complicated man, but he lived by simple rules: show up, work hard, make no excuses, tell the truth, and take responsibility.

More than anything, he taught me that the most extraordinary moments in life come from a willingness to be astonished — and that requires both curiosity and courage.

I’ve carried that lesson with me on every journey: navigating language barriers, getting lost in unfamiliar places, trying foods I couldn’t pronounce, and saying yes to experiences that pushed me beyond what was comfortable. Because the world has so much to teach us when we’re brave enough to explore it.

Happy International Picnic Day!!

I love picnics! They're fun, sometimes romantic, affordable alternatives to pricey restaurants -- and allow you to sample local foods in a casual way when traveling.

When my husband and I roam we always picnic -- and one of our favorite traditions is grabbing wine and snacks from a convenience store or even a gas station ... the center photo was our dinner one night in 🇲🇪 last fall -- so fun!

What's been your best-yet picnic location?

Are you the parent of a tween, teen, or college student?
This message is for you—not from Kathy the travel advisor, but from Kathy the mom.
I know how busy you are because I've lived it. I raised five active kids, and I remember the endless cycle of practices, band concerts, piano lessons, and school events—all while trying to keep up with a demanding career and the never-ending list of things that needed to get done at home.
It's a lot.
But here's what I want you to know:
The window for traveling with your children—the sweet spot when they're old enough to truly appreciate the experience but not yet fully absorbed into adult life—is surprisingly small.
Smaller than you think.
As a parent, I urge you to seize that opportunity while you have it, because it doesn't last.
The moment your child graduates and starts a "real job," everything changes. School breaks disappear. Schedules become complicated. Vacation time becomes limited. Suddenly, what once could have been a week or two together becomes a long weekend squeezed between work obligations.
Even when they want to go, they often can't.
This week, I helped a father and his teenage son plan an adventure through the stunning fjords of Norway. I welcomed home a mother and son who spent a week exploring the Greek Isles together. And I'm helping parents plan a journey through Japan with their teenage daughters.
Without question, this is the most rewarding work I've ever done.
Because I understand what these trips really are.
They're not just vacations.
They're memories you'll talk about years from now. They're shared experiences that strengthen relationships. They're the conversations that happen while watching a sunset over the ocean, wandering through a centuries-old city, or sitting together over dinner with nowhere else to be.
They're moments when your child tells you what they're really thinking about their future. What excites them. What worries them. Who they're becoming.
Those moments are rare in everyday life.
Travel creates space for them.
And before you know it, this season of life will be over.
Take the trip.
Trust me.

We don't talk about this enough: Planning a vacation is a lot of work.

For people already carrying the mental load at work and at home, the mental load of managing all the details and logistics of a vacation can feel like just one more thing to handle -- so instead of taking the break they genuinely need, many people keep pushing through burnout because it feels easier.

Most people absolutely can book their own travel. The question is whether they still want to.

Because when travel is meant to feel restorative, sometimes the greatest luxury is having someone else thoughtfully handle the details — someone who knows what questions to ask, what problems to anticipate, and how to make the experience feel seamless from the beginning.

That’s what I love about helping people travel well.

Not just finding a beautiful place, but making the process easier, calmer, and more enjoyable so clients can actually look forward to the experience instead of feeling overwhelmed by it.

After years of taking care of everyone and everything else, many people are realizing they want travel to feel different — less stressful, more meaningful, and genuinely rejuvenating.

And honestly? I think they deserve that.
