Let’s Talk Sargassum: The Summer Travel Question We Get Asked Most 🫣

If you’re headed to Cancun, Riviera Maya, or Tulum this summer, you’ve probably heard about sargassum (the brown seaweed that washes ashore each year).

Here’s the good news: sargassum does NOT mean your vacation is ruined. It simply means some beaches may experience periods of seaweed accumulation, especially from May through October, with July and August typically seeing the highest levels.

What is Mexico doing about it?
🇲🇽 The Mexican government, the Navy, local municipalities, and resorts are investing heavily in:
• Offshore containment barriers
• Specialized collection vessels
• Daily beach cleanup crews
• Ongoing monitoring and forecasting systems

In 2026 alone, thousands of meters of seaweed barriers, multiple collection vessels, and large-scale cleanup operations have been deployed across Quintana Roo to keep beaches as clear as possible.

A few things travelers should know:
✔️ Conditions change daily based on winds and currents.
✔️ Some beaches are affected more than others.
✔️ Areas like Isla Mujeres and Playa Mujeres are often less impacted due to their geography.
✔️ Resorts work incredibly hard every morning to clear beaches before guests arrive.
