Yesterday my bill to enact the New York Travel Insurance Act (A.11411), passed unanimously in the Assembly. If enacted by the Governor, this legislation would modernize New York’s travel insurance market. Currently, over 40 states have enacted similar modernization legislation, giving consumers access to more travel insurance options with vetted, built-in consumer protection measures.

For New Yorkers participating in group travel, they are often excluded from more affordable group travel insurance plans because the coverage must be tailored to what is permitted in the New York market. Hearing from constituents, this has left travelers frustrated when they must buy more expensive individual options that may not cover as much.

Travel insurance is especially important as we begin to see greater challenges from aviation fuel costs to regional disruptions that cause tens of thousands of trips to be cancelled, delayed or rerouted. I encourage my colleagues in the Senate to pass this legislation as soon as possible. As travel expenses continue to balloon, travelers must have comprehensive and affordable options.

If your U.S. passport is lost or stolen while you’re overseas, our consular teams around the world can help. Here’s what to do:
1️⃣ Stay calm. Our teams can help get you an emergency passport in order to return to the United States.
2️⃣ Contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate for help. Visit the U.S. Embassy website for the country you’re in to find their emergency contact info and/or their process for replacing a lost or stolen passport. You can also find this contact info at travel.state.gov/destination.
3️⃣ Apply for your emergency passport in person. Follow the instructions provided by the Embassy or Consulate regarding walk-in hours or scheduling an appointment as well as what to bring.
4️⃣ Apply for a full validity passport when you’re back in the United States. If you apply for the full-validity replacement passport within one year of the emergency passport being issued, it will be exchanged without any additional fees. Learn more at travel.state.gov/ReplaceLimitedPassport
