The TOT-TBID-funded Tahoe Wood Project continues to explore innovative ways to support sustainable housing and forest health in the region. Last month, the project hosted the free public workshop, Building Tahoe Housing from Local Wood: Hands-on Panel Workshop, which provided training on nail-laminated timber and engaged stakeholders in conversations about integrating locally sourced wood into priority housing needs in the Truckee-Tahoe region.

May is Wildfire Preparedness Month, a timely reminder that readiness is a shared responsibility across our region.

At this month’s First Tuesday Breakfast Club, local and regional fire, forestry, emergency management, and infrastructure partners shared updates on wildfire response, forest health, evacuation readiness, and ongoing fire suppression efforts. The discussion underscored the importance of coordination between agencies and communities as we prepare for the season ahead.

As wildfire season approaches, residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed by exploring available resources, including emergency alerts, interactive maps, and educational tools that support preparedness and awareness throughout the region.

Preparedness here isn’t just planning, it’s part of how we care for each other and this place.

If you host a short-term rental in North Tahoe, you already know the responsibility gap: most guests want to do right by this place, but they don't know there's no need to buy bottled water here, that bears will pry open a car for a candy wrapper, or that quiet hours actually mean something to your neighbors.

There's a free kit that does the explaining for you. The Lake Tahoe Short Term Rental Guest Messaging Kit covers five things guests consistently don't know — water, fire, bears, parking, and noise — and puts the signage exactly where the behavior happens: faucet hang tags by the sink, gas tank hang tags by the propane, "Close. Lock. Check." stickers on the bear box, an interior sign by the front door for parking, a quiet hours table topper on the patio.

One kit per home, free, pick up at the North Lake Tahoe Visitor Information Centers in Tahoe City or Kings Beach.

The North Lake Tahoe TBID was just renewed by the business community for another 10 years — and with the renewal came an updated Management District Plan (MDP) that more clearly lays out where the roughly $6.5M raised each year is reinvested back into our community.

For 2026–2036, the budget categories are: • Economic Health & Resiliency — 47% • Community Vitality — 22% • Zone 1 (lakeside) Specific Services — 15% • Environmental Stewardship — 10% • Contingency — 4% • Placer County collection administration — 2%

Behind those percentages: workforce housing programs, transit and transportation initiatives, trail connectivity, stewardship and human-impact mitigation, infrastructure that supports both residents and visitor-serving businesses. The work is carried out collaboratively through NTCA, the North Tahoe Chamber, and Lake Tahoe Travel — with shared staff across organizations to keep things efficient.

This is the playbook for the next decade of TBID-funded work in North Lake Tahoe.

We're hiring the 2026 Lake Tahoe Ambassadors — a paid summer internship for local youth, run in partnership with the Sierra Nevada Alliance.

Ambassadors get hands-on training in natural history, wildfire prevention, trail stewardship, species identification, and communication, then spend the summer at beaches, trailheads, and visitor centers sharing responsible-recreation tips with visitors. They also model stewardship in action — picking up litter, supporting clean recreation spaces, and using citizen-science tools to track observations in the field. College-level crew leaders guide the team.

If you (or a young person you know) cares about Tahoe and wants to spend the summer protecting it, apply here 👉 https://www.northtahoecommunityalliance.com/environmental-stewardship/now-hiring-lake-tahoe-ambassadors/
