Lake Tahoe’s water clarity has been improving in recent years, with the average annual clarity reaching nearly 72 feet in 2023. This is a significant improvement from 2021, when the clarity was 61 feet. Scientists measure the clarity of Lake Tahoe by lowering a 10-inch white disk, called a Secchi disk, into the water and measuring how deep it remains visible. Factors that can affect the clarity include:
Particles: The concentration of particles like silt and clay in a specific size range
Phytoplankton: Tiny algae
Zooplankton: These almost invisible animals eat bacteria, algae, and other zooplankton, which can help improve water quality and algal densities.
