A decision in the Canadian courts has ordered Environment and Climate Change Canada to reconsider its decision to grant a permit that would have authorized construction of a massive radioactive waste disposal facility that would have wrecked the habitats of endangered and at risk species. The planned facility would be built less than 1.1 kilometers from the Ottawa River (Kichi Sibi), a watershed that provides drinking water to millions of Canadians.

Having nuclear power as an outlaw is not a good idea to say the least. But we are rolling back the clock to the era of the Atomic Energy Commission when nuclear regulator and promoter were one and the same. This is an extraordinary abdication of responsibility by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (lapdog, puppy dog, either is better than no guard dog at all.) The US Department of Energy is not qualified to be the arbiter of what is "safe" in the nuclear sector for the general public, and nor is "safe" being fully defined here.

It reveals an orchestrated and well-funded effort to ensure Democrats fully back nuclear power. Castagno describes how billionaire tech boosters such as Bill Gates have donated tens of millions of dollars to pro-nuclear non-profits. He also lays out the spider’s web of connections between individuals floating between political appointments, lobbying groups and tech companies and shows that leading Democrats such as Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Cory Booker have received huge financial support from nuclear interests including from leaders at Breakthrough Energy, Google and Holtec.

The line is getting very blurry now between the already lapdog and promotion-oriented Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the overtly promotional Department of Energy. NRC is ceding far too much safety oversight to the DOE on new reactors. Even a weak regulator is better than none. That was what the Atomic Energy Act was for.
