An aptly named gathering

Beyond Nuclear’s Linda Pentz Gunter presented ideas stemming from her new book No To Nuclear. Why Nuclear Power Destroys Lives, Derails Climate Progress And Provokes War — on the May edition of Night With The Experts. The monthly online meeting, hosted by Nuclear Energy Information Service, is aptly named, as it is effectively a gathering of many “experts” from around the country and overseas engaged in abolishing nuclear power. As a result, Linda’s presentation was more informal and discussion-focused, exploring ideas as to how we can better message our issues and draw in new audiences while focusing on the human impacts from the detriments of nuclear power featured in her book and, appealing to core values beyond “just the facts” to encourage new allies.

In a 29-minute documentary, An Ordinary Insanity, largely featuring the final thoughts of renowned whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, we are reminded that the imperative to abolish nuclear weapons is more urgent than ever. As the film reveals, nuclear abolition was a cause to which Ellsberg, 92 at the time of filming and in the last year of his life, dedicated his career— and would have given his life for. “I’ve long said that to my last breath I will be doing what I can to postpone and avert the risk of nuclear war,” he says in the film. Ellsberg was a nuclear war planner even before he famously released the Pentagon Papers. The full film is free online, to share, and for public screenings, conferences, classrooms and viewing parties.

Beyond Nuclear chose Susan Mirsky as this year's winnerof our Dr. Judith H. Johnsrud Unsung Hero Award. Mirsky has been organizing for peace since high school when she founded a local Youth Committee on Sane Nuclear Policy in Essex County, New Jersey. Since then, she has gone on to embrace — and work for — a multitude of causes directly or indirectly related to peace, nuclear abolition.

In yet another alarming development coming out of the White House, private corporations proposing risky and untested startup reactors are to be given access to plutonium, the trigger component in a nuclear bomb.

The Trump administration is proposing to allow private entities access to Cold War era leftover plutonium in order to convert it into fuel for risky new reactors that have yet to pass any kind of rigorous safety analysis.

Are private reactor startups about to be given the passport to the bomb?
