The Flower Kennel and Homestead - Talkeetna, AK

The Flower Kennel and Homestead - Talkeetna, AK Sled dog kennel and Homestead tours. Alaskan lifestyle experience; off-grid living with sled dogs. Welcome to our home.

Visit the Flower Homestead, a musher’s homestead tucked away just south of Talkeetna in the Boreal forest of Alaska. Here we live a sustainable life together with the Flower Kennel Sled dogs. The kennel is unique in that the sled dogs are not only part of the family, but an integral part of our real authentic off-grid Alaskan lifestyle. The dogs help with hauling water from our spring in winter an

d haul our building material and firewood we harvest from our homestead to keep warm and cozy during the cold Alaska winters. We grow, harvest and gather most of our own food and live a self-reliant lifestyle as much as possible. We are committed to our dogs and the Flower Kennel is their forever home. Our tours are an exclusive opportunity to see how and why we live in the far North. We are a small locally owned operation and our tours are casual and personal.

Summer is taking its sweet time to start this year. There is still frost 2 ft down. My nodig garden became a yesdig garden with the lack of compost available to smother the weeds. A fresh start and planting soon.

On the other side we go down Notch creek, cross Cross creek and navigating our way around and through the overflow on the Chisana river. With the help of a gps track loaded into our phone apps we find our way off the river. We spend a couple days at the NPS “Too Much Johnson” cabin and exploring old Chisana before heading back. Fun fact, Johnson was a freight sled musher known for ditching cargo along the way if it was too much. We would have been right there with him wasn’t it for the snowmachine - Running Dog Service.

Just before we have the 54k feet Cooper pass in sight we encounter 2 miles of up to 30 degrees glaciated ice. The snowmachine studs are biting into the hard ice without a problem but the dog’s nails are no match. We strap on snowshoes and tie ourselves into the gangline. With a lot of slipping and sliding we make it to the pass.

Gotta give it to the Kiglu dog. He will chase the snowmachine under any conditions.

Nabesna River on our way to Chisana. Skirting overflow until we couldn’t. Running over ice, rocks, black sand, tree stumps and 6” of overflow for 4 miles before we found snow again in Cooper Creek valley.

We had to get out of the cold and mostly that insane wind real quick to avoid frostbite. Hooked the dogs in front of the snowmachine and the mushing sled behind.
