Timing is everything—especially when the ground is boiling.

Standing in front of Strokkur is a lesson in anticipation. You watch the water pulse and recede in the vent, the steam rising in the crisp air, and then—boom. A column of boiling water shoots nearly 100 feet into the Icelandic sky.

When I took this photo during the summer solstice, I was struck by the person on the left with their arms outstretched. That’s exactly how Iceland makes you feel. It’s too big to look at with your hands in your pockets. You have to open up to it.
