The palace, modelled on a hilltop castle, was designed by Heinrich Christoph Jussow between 1793 and 1801, centuries after the time when castles were built in Germany. It is an imitation of a medieval knight's castle and deliberately presented as a romantic artificial ruin. Initially planned only as a ruined tower with outbuildings, a complete castle complex was eventually built, which is grouped around a courtyard. The place served the landgrave as a residence for himself and his mistress Karoline von Schlotheim. In 1821, the landgrave, who had been raised by Elector Wilhelm I in 1803, was buried in a grave beneath the palace chapel. The Löwenburg was built from the start from less weather-resistant falcon tuff, which was available near the site.
